Wanderers striker Johann Smith has suffered an ankle injury whilst playing for the United States U-20 squad in a friendly game against New Zealand ahead of the forthcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup tournament in Canada.

The 20-year old made his Bolton debut against Charlton Athletic in the Carling Cup last season and spent the remainder of the 2006-2007 campaign out on loan at League One side Carlisle United.

USA coach Thomas Rongen said the whole of the squad where devasted for Smith.

"This is obviously a difficult time for Johann, missing out on a tournament that he was clearly looking forward to so our hearts go out to him." said Rongen.

Connecticut-born Smith joined Bolton three winters ago from the Oakwood Soccer Club following a successful trial spell.
