Aston Villa midfielder Patrik Berger is on the verge of a first-team return after finally overcoming his four-month injury torment. The Czech midfielder, who signed on a free transfer from Portsmouth in the summer, has not played for the first-team since October when he damaged his knee ligaments against Manchester City.

However, Berger is set to play for the reserve side tonight against Sunderland reserves, and if all goes well, he could make only his tenth appearance for Villa against Charlton on Saturday.

Speaking about Berger's progress, Villa boss David O'Leary commented, "If he continues to progress the way he is, we will be able to introduce him."
