Juan Pablo Angel scored his first goal of the season as Aston Villa made it four games without defeat and ended Bolton's impressive run of eight straight home victories.
Despite going a goal down with just eight minutes of the game remaining, Angel, an 84th minute substitute, struck from close-range to earn the point which moves Villa up to 14th in the Premiership table.
With Bolton aiming to continue their excellent home record of late and Villa hoping to move clear of the relegation zone, the game promised to be a very competetive encounter.
This was clear from the off, and with the home side racing out of the traps, it looked as if Sam Allardyce's men were going to record their ninth straight home win.
Kevin Davies posed the greatest threat in the opening exchanges as he forced a point-blank stop from Sorensen following N'Gotty's free-kick and the striker was denied again immediately afterwards as Wilfred Bouma knocked the ball behind for a corner with Davies ready to pounce.
Bolton continued to push for an opening goal, and with Villa penned into their own half for much of the opening half hour, Thomas Sorensen was called upon again; this time to divert O'Brien's goalbound effort.
The visitors' first telling effort on goal didn't come until the half hour mark when Lee Hendrie slipped Baros through on goal, only to see the Czech striker miscontrol when well positioned.
With 40 minutes on the clock, Gary Speed came within inches of finally breaking the deadlock but his powerful header was tipped onto the post by the Villa 'keeper and at half time, the two teams went in goalless.
With the second half getting underway, the game continued to follow the same pattern with Bolton creating all the chances and the Villans seemingly happy to sit back and soak up the pressure.
Within a minute of the restart, Davies slipped the ball in to Diouf who beat Sorensen, but failed to beat Aaron Hughes who desperately chased back and slid the ball off the line.
After yet another wake-up call, O'Leary's men finally started to create chances of their own with James Milner forcing an athletic save from Jussi Jaaskelainen, before Gavin McCann had the Bolton keeper scampering across his line as his long-range effort skipped past the post.
With the home fans starting to get frustrated, Sam Allardyce introduced Vaz Te in late attempt to claim all three points and he must have thought his master plan had worked when the youngster's whipped delivery was converted by the head of El-Hadji Diouf.
With only six minutes left on the clock and his team facing their first defeat in four matches, O'Leary threw Juan Pablo into the equation and just four minutes after being introduced, the Columbian grabbed his first goal of the season and earnt Villa their eighth point in four games.
