Liverpool took the game to FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou and the draw leaves them with a slim chance of progress.

Liverpool host AS Roma next week at Anfield with Michael Owen perhaps returning and the Italian champion's home draw with Galatasary in Rome means all four sides can each the quarter finals heading into the final game.

Although defender Philippe Cristanval hit the post with a shot in the 68th minute, Barca rarely produced the attacking style to break down the Liverpool defence with the English side looking dangerous on the counter attack especially in the first half hour.

Emle Heskey almost gave Liverpool a 9th minute lead but dragged a shot just wide while Steven Gerrard headed past the post when unmarked midway through the session and missed an early chance by air-kicking but Liverpool were comfortable in defence as well with only the furtive movement of Javier Saviola posing a problem.

Sami Hyypia and Stephane Henchoz dominated the Barca attack which was hampered by a clearly unfit Rivaldo.

Dietmar Hamann's midfield presence worked well alongside the powerful running of Gerrard and Barca were left to struggle.

Heskey needed to block a Philip Cocu chance with his face late one as Barca produced a flurry of attacking but Polish goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek was rarely tested.
