Lennon and Thomson

Celtic have sacked assistant boss Alan Thomson only a matter of weeks after helping lead them to their first title in four years.

There even appears to be a level of controversy over the way the matter was handled. Thomson was “sacked” by a phone call from Neil Lennon after failing to turn up for a pre-arranged meeting inNewcastleyesterday.

Lennon has said the sacking is down to wanting to take his training and work with the players in a different direction, but at the moment doesn’t plan to bring anyone else in to cover the role. Instead he will work with Johan Mjallby and Gary Parker when pre-season starts.

Thomson has also instructed his lawyers to take action against Celtic although the statement from the lawyers doesn’t say on what grounds.

There will be many cynics in the West of Scotland who will say they saw this coming with constant rumours going round about Thomson’s behaviour away from the ground. In many people’s minds this will be more like the reason for the dismissal, but we have to take the word of Lennon it is for football reasons.

There have also been stories linking Thomson with a move to Aston Villa to work with Paul Lambert. It will be interesting therefore to see where this leads and what the end game from this sacking will be!

At least it has kept the Rangers story off the back pages for a day anyway.
