The SFA have today appointed Scott Booth the new assistant coach to the National Youth Teams

Booth will work alongside the Performance Director, Mark Wotte, with the Victory Shield squad. The formerAberdeen, Borussia Dortmund,Utrechtand FC Twente forward will also play a role within the new National Performance Schools.

He is currently undertaking his UEFA Pro Licence and has already achieved his A and B licences.

This is an interesting appointment given he hasn’t coached since retiring in 2004 after his second spell atAberdeen. Rather than take up a coaching role he has spent his time in the media, working for Setanta, Sky, BBC Scotland and ESPN.

For me this makes this a strange choice, it would appear he has got the job after working with Wotte during his spell atUtrechtas a player.

I for one would be happier with a young but experienced coach who has earned his spurs and will be ready to take the youth programme forward.

I guess at the end of the day we need to get behind the role and hope he helps his Dutch mentor create a platform for future stars to come through and hopefully see us quaiify for a major championships in the future.
