Former Rangers player and SFA Chief Exec Gordon Smith is being reported to be joining Rangers as Director of Football

BBC Scotland has learned, Smith will be appointed director of football at Rangers.  Smith last position in football was at the Scottish Football Association as chief executive and previously played for the Ibrox club from 1977-1980.

Since leaving the SFA last year Smith had returned to his media role as a pundit on Radio Scotland and as a columnist in the Scottish Daily Express.

Smith had previously had a spell as an agent before taking up his role at the SFA. You get the impression Smith is unsure what he really wants to do in the world of football and would rather chase the money and the publicity.

His spell at the SFA, for me, would be judged as a bit of a failure as he failed to make any important changes, while Stewart Regan has come and made the changes Smith couldn’t.

His role will be to assist manager Ally McCoist in his debut season, but this could be a real clash of egos, it will be interesting to see if they can work together….
