Queen of the South have appointed their new manager, and Kilmarnock are getting closer to naming theirs.

The Doonhamers have appointed former Saint Mirren Manager Gus MacPherson to replace the outgoing Kenny Brannigan. This, for me, is an inspired choice by the Dumfries side, given the track record of MacPherson with Saints.

He took them to the Premier League and kept them there for three seasons, and did well in the Cups, including a League Cup Final, but for some reason the Saints fans weren’t happy and wanted to see him out the door.

The new boss will be joined by Andy Millen as his assistant, as he was at Paisley. Millen was playing for Queen’s Park last season, but I am sure he won’t be playing for the Queens this season.

This appointment may push the Queens into serious contention for promotion this season.

Over at Rugby Park it looks as though will be about to appoint stand in boss Kenny Shiels on a permanent basis. He took over when Mixu Paatelainen when he moved to take over as Finland’s manager last season.

It looks as though Shiels will be joined as his assistant by Jimmy Nicholl who has already being replaced as manager of Cowdenbeath, with Colin Cameron already taking over there.

I have a theory that football clubs should never appoint the assistant, or caretaker, as manager it very rarely seems to work. Bit with Killie have little finds to spread around this may have been the only option for them. Therefore you can understand the concerns of the fans who were featured on BBC Scotland this week.
