Rangers scrape through to League Cup Final

Edu scores

Motherwell pushed Rangers close in this League Cup Semi Final but still lost out by one goal to go out.

The game got off to an entertaining start with opportunities being created by both sides. Sutton and Murphy hitting weak efforts straight at Alexander and at the other end McCulloch and Whittaker shot wide.

Rangers took the lead in 20th minute with a shot out of nothing, Edu picked up a loosed ball 25 yards from goal and bent an unstoppable left foot shot high past Randolph.

At this stage Motherwell were playing the better football and playing the ball around well and it was against the run of play a bit that Rangers took the ball. This led to other chances with Hateley shooting over, Alexander saving a Hammell free kick and Murphy sending a long range shot over.

Motherwell had an early penalty shout at the start of the half when David Weir clambered all over Sutton as Saunders sent in a long throw, but referee Collum waved play on.

Jennings then sent in a stinging drive that Alexander had to save at the second attempt. Then on 66 minutes the game was level once again, with a spectacular strike from Keith Lasley from 25 yards nestling in the bottom right hand corner.

This only seemed to rattle Rangers cage and the pushed forward once again with McCulloch heading over before they took the lead again. Jelavic peeled off to the left before sending an inviting cross to the back post for Naismith to head in at the far post.

Motherwell continued to push forward and Sutton saw a header cleared by Papac, then a Suanders saw a header saved by Alexander and then in stoppage time Murphy had a shot saved by Alexander.

This was a great effort from Well and they probably deserved to take the game to extra time at least, but the result sets up another Old Firm Final
