Commons celebrates

A whirlwind start to this game from Celtic meant it was over as a contest within the opening 30 minutes. Celtic now progress to take on the winners of tomorrows tie between Motherwell and Rangers.

After signing only yesterday Kris Commons was thrust straight into this League Cup semi final against Aberdeen. He made an immediate impact by opening the scoring after only six minutes.

Aberdeen made hard work of clearing a corner before the ball reached Commons at the edge of the box. It looked as though he was trying to pick out Stokes at the back post and he over hit it and the ball deceived Jamie Langfield and dropped in.

Things were even worse for the Dons only three minutes later when they found themselves two goals down. A Commons corner was headed back into the six yard box by Rogne for Mulgrew to head over the line from close range.

Two minutes later the Dons had a great chance to pull one back when Vernon was sent clean through but his shot beat Foster and hit the base of the post and was eventually cleared.

It took eleven minutes before Celtic scored again, Langfield did well to turn a Stokes volley over the bar. Once again the Dons did not defend the corner, Mulgrew was left on his own at the back of the box to knock it back in for Rogne to score from close range this time.

Things went from bad to worse for the Dons when they were four down just after the half hour mark. A Joe Ledley free struck the arm of Young in the defensive wall for a penalty which was converted by Stokes.

This led to an exodus of the Red Army from the ground with a good number of them showing their disgust by throwing scarves and flags on to the Hampden track.

Even when they were presented with a golden chance just about 15 minutes after the break the Dons let slip. Maguire raced clear of the defence rounded keeper Foster and then blasted over from a tight angle when it would have been easier to roll the ball in.

They did get one back minutes later, a free kick from Milsom was floated into the 6 yard box where Scott Vernon rose unchallenged to head past a stranded Foster. This was a well deserved reward for a spirited start to the second period and gave the fans left some hope, however forlorn!
