Former Arsenal winger Freddy Ljunberg is spending a week at Celtic Park with a view to signing in January – is this a panic move?

Neil Lennon has invited former Arsenal and Sweden winger Freddy Ljunberg to spend a week at Celtic Park with a view to signing in January. It has been stressed it is not a trial but time for Celtic to look at him and for him to look at Celtic!

After a year at West Ham he has spent the last 18 months in the MLS with Seattle Sounders and the Chicago Fire. The 33 year old is looking to return to the UK and is in Glasgow and hoping to be ready for the Old Firm game on Saturday.

This seems to be a bit of a knee jerk reaction to the injury to Gary Hooper and the departure of the two Koreans to the Asian Championships.

There is no doubt Ljunberg was a class act at Arsenal, but struggled at West Ham and seemed to be ending his career in the US.

Lennon has stuffed his side with people from all over the world, and is still struggling to come up with a blend. This all came after he had promised to fill his team with British type players.

Ljunberg could well be the right type of player but I am sure he won’t come cheap and it would seem that, as with the two Keane’s in the past, Celtic have been forced to come up with a “marquee” signing in the transfer window.

They need to be careful as the Keane examples proved commercially successful but the side failed to win much with them in their side.
