Merse talks to today's Guardian

Walsall manager Paul Merson has given an interview to today's Guardian, where he talks about his future and, of course, Sunday's Big Game.

Walsall manager Paul Merson has been speaking to today's Guardian. Despite losing every game since taking over as manager from Colin Lee, Merson appears in good humour, and made it clear once again that he would like to take on his new job on a permanent basis.

"I don't want to end with four defeats out of four and the worst managerial record in the world," he said, and the interview seemed to suggest that Merson would know on Monday morning whether he will be given the job permanently.

The decision could depend on whether Merson keeps Walsall in Division One. With his side needing to win on Sunday, possibly by 3 goals, Merson will start against Rotherham. "We need to make chances in this game and score. I've got to pick the best team and without being big-headed, I think I have to play," he said.

Merson then talked about Gillingham's situation. He said: "They probably expected to be safe last weekend. How do they approach the game? Do they go for a point and hope we don't score three?" So, was he playing mind games, the interviewer asked him? "I ain't that clever," he said.
