Gary Birch has rejected a new deal at Walsall, an offer which  Colin Lee told the Express and Star  "reflects his form last season".

From a fans perspective, Birch had a relatively poor season and failed to capitalise on the faith both Colin Lee and the fans showed in him early on in the season.

Birch said.... 

"I'm not happy with the contract that's been offered so I haven't signed it. I'll report back as normal tomorrow and we'll have to see what happens."

Because he is only aged 22 the Saddlers will be entitled to a fee if another club comes in with an offer.  This rule has been put in place to protect clubs like Walsall who nurture young talent only to have it taken away by other clubs for nothing. 

The Club are presumably happy to have Gary on a week-to-week contract knowing that if he is to leave the club, it will be for a fee, or some form of compensation.  

Birch must be worried that in a Market flooded with players on "free's" his chances of finding another club are relatively slim.
