Greek First Division Club Ionikos Piraeus have signed former Walsall
duo Danni Rodriguez and Herivelto until the end of the season.
The players were released after failing to make an impression at the
Bescot. Their departures made way for new loan signings such
as Gareth Ainsworth, Neil Emblen and Philip Javary.
Much was expected from Rodriguez who had joined from premiership
Southampton, but he left the Bescot Stadium only having made 1 sub
appearance on the opening day of the season.
As for Herivelto, he spent around 18 months at Walsall and despite
glimpses of brilliance he was never able sustain a good run of form in
the first team.
Although they were losing finalists in the Greek Cup final during the
2000/2001 season, they are the perennial strugglers of Greek football, and
only finished 3rd from bottom last season.
Reaching the cup final was a major achievement for the Athens based
club, whose local rivals include Olympiakos, Panathanikos, and AEK
Athens who beat them 2-0 in the Cup Final.
Their stadium, the Dimitico
Neapolis only holds 6000 fans, and they
are hardly likely to gatecrash the upper half of the Greek Table.
* The 16th placed team is relegated.
