IT SEEMS an opportune moment to get this old leaky clapped-out ship sailing once again.
Once again, I've decided I can't resist the challenge (huh?) of trying to battle the inequities of SportNetwork, and the perceived lack of interest in this site in general – yes, I know lots of people visit it as I can see the statistics behind it, so that's all good, but it'd be even more gooder if folk would dip their toe in once in a while and engage on the Forum.
But that's an old story, and one on which I will dwell no longer.
No, as before, I still don't 'own' or otherwise have a stake in this site (I 'resigned' over a year ago, remember?), but per the last time I stepped in due to the Forum being locked down by SportNetwork for the crime of No Updates For Fourteen Days, I'm just trying to get things unstuck in time for a Fairly Important Game.
However, all being well, from now on, we'll see a new Unofficial Coventry Rugby site, which will be updated regularly and not allowed to fall by the wayside due to inactivity on the Front/News page.
And what brings about this change?
New blood, that's what.
Yes, I've received an undertaking from a couple of existing site members to help with all things admin – including writing regular articles with a slightly different, fresher, and far more interesting slant than I can manage. It'll all be run on totally co-operative lines - no Divvy stamps though - and if anyone else fancies throwing their hat into the ring, just let us know. And now I've frightened them, I'll modify that just to say they have both offered to take up the shackles of Moderatorship of this site with the promise of occasional input to help keep the old barge afloat. For all of which, I am grateful. And I'll introduce the new boys in the next day or two.
Moving on then, there are a few small matters to cover:
A: The Prediction League is now updated to include the Jersey game, and after eight games, the leader is Titchywinger with 38 points, from Many Layers on 37, and Billyboy on 36. I also note I have predicted twice though (according to the table) which I know is incorrect as I just did it the once to test it at the start of the season. Makes you wonder about this software sometimes!
B: We, as a team, seem to have found our finishing spot in the Championship for this season, don't we? Barring miracles, Ampthill won't be taking anything from Sarries tomorrow, so we should retain our ten point buffer above A's. Given that we possibly won't get anything ourselves next Saturday (never say never, but unlikely), but would hope for five points on the final weekend (again, no guarantees), fifth place should be ours. Oh for the upright to have been a couple of inches nearer the touchline at Doncaster, and we may well have been a few points closer to Pirates, and even ahead of them had a few decisions/groundings/fumbles gone our way a couple of weeks back. But, as I've said before, if my Aunt had gonads of the male variety, she'd be my Uncle.
C: On to the Sarries match. Won't it be good to see a crowd in the BPA, albeit severely curtailed in numbers and freedoms on what it might have been had it not been for this horrible 'thing' that's been going round for what seems like forever? 4000? More? I'm not sure what the permitted ground capacity is registered as, but if Goldington Road, with its small grandstand and basically level standing areas can take an estimated 5000 souls (against Ampthill, Boxing Day) then there's a chance the BPA should be able to as well. Think of the income. As JS said the other day, it's probably going to cost him to get this game on rather than be able to invest a few shekels into assembling next season's squad. So sad. No use dwelling on that though, and it will just be grand to see 1400 (masked) faces in attendance.
D: Jersey. What a result. I refrain from predicting scores both here (notwithstanding tests as mentioned) and on Rolling Maul, but I was pretty confident that we could overcome and defy the tide of Jersey 4-1, 5-0, 5-1, and 5-2 predictions on the latter, but never by such an emphatic margin. Nobody on RM gave Cov a sniff of a win yesterday, so doesn't that feel good? We're awaiting a few photos from 'Islander' at Jersey (thanks Tom) and I'll try to get them added here asap.
That's all for now though. More tomorrow when I introduce the new victims – er – volunteers.
