Nottingham Nights

By AdminBTCov
December 1 2018

The game at the end of the short(ish) bimble up the M1 motorway was viewed as a challenge by most, and so it turned out. Our spies at The Bay reported, at times with some ire, that although Cov competed pretty well, they were partly the architects of their own downfall, eschewing a bonus point at the death by going for the corner instead of taking a fairly straightforward 3-pointer.

Other comments were less than complimentary of the referee's management at scrum time, where the visitors had a couple of opportunities to rumble over, but were comprehensively frustrated by several re-sets, when even a Nottingham observer was reportedly rather bemused as to why a penalty try was not awarded. I'll not go there though.

nottm1.jpg

The feeling seems to be that Cov were more than value for at least two points, and would not have been flattered had four or five been bagged.

Qualification for the knock-out stages, though, still seems eminently possible.

Final Score: Nottingham 33-24 Coventry

Try Scorers: Makaafi, Kessell, Maisey, Faleafa

Conversions: Maisey (2)

Attendance: 900-odd

900 + crowd at a ground in a city of the size of Nottingham is pathetic and wholly predictable based on the lack of interest for this internal league cup.

A simple knock out would have served the fans better, instead of drawing the process out, by the season end the winners may have played the same opposition 6 times !

From a Cov point of view it's great, because we can bring the whole squad up to championship levels without risking our league status.

Im opening saying Im a tigers fan, but whenever Tigers arent playing at home I always try and go and watch Notts at home. Covkid53 is completely correct, the difference in Notts crowds between cup games and league games is clear to see, same with the atmospheres, like when they played Ealing at home, big crowd great atmosphere, but cup games dont have the same effect, theres nothing behind games. And as for Marks comments they are just completely wrong, I dont whether Mark has ever been to Lady Bay, but to get there you go past 3 massive stadiums (all within a miles radius of the bay) that tend to draw the big crowds from the city, so to get a big crowd for a meaningless game is very difficult. And Im sure the Notts fans wont be particularly happy with comments like that Mark.

Nottm's Championship average is currently 1210, with a low of 1035, so not all that different really Ben.

And I'm not entirely convinced that 1397 (v Ealing) can really be described as a 'big' crowd to be honest.
Great result though, which deserved far more witnesses.

As I said before, try and compete with 2 Football teams, 1 cricket team and an ice hockey team and then we will see how many you get to your matches then.

Let's see...
Coventry city - a league level football team.
Wasps, a Premiership rugby team.
Two football teams that play at our own ground,
a top level ice hockey team a very short walk away.
OK - a bit lacking on cricket, but as cricket isn't played at the same time of year as rugby it#'s really irrelevant.

Any other excuses for why so few people watch Nottingham rugby club? Ah yes - their population is lower than Coventyr - but both round to the 300,000.

We do. Wasps, Coventry City, Cov Blaze ice hockey ...

It wasnt a criticism of Nottingham rfc just an observation and sad reflection due to lack of appreciation of a great sport, although the resect shown to our kicker by the Notts supporters laughing joking and shouting as he took a kick right by was disgraceful

Ok, lets go more in depth (for the pro teams)-

What Coventry Rugby compete with;
Wasps - Average Attendance around 15,000 - Ricoh Arena
Coventry City - Average Attendance less than 10,000 - Ricoh Arena
Coventry Blaze - Average Attendance around 2 - 3,000 - SkyDome Arena
Rememeber the Ricoh Arena is 4 Miles away from the Butts Park

What Nottingham Rugby have to compete with;
Nottingham Forest - Average Attendance around 30,000 - City Ground (Across the road from The Bay)
Notts County - Average Attendance just less than 10,000 - Meadow Lane (Across the river from The Bay)
Nottingham CCC - Average Attendance around 15,000 to T20 matches - Trent Bridge (Across the road from The Bay)
Notts Panthers - Average Attendance around 10,000 - Motorpoint Arena

So yes its pretty clear to see that Notts have to compete with a lot more than Cov do, and thats probably why Cov get higher attendances than Notts.

Forests av attendances are definitely not 27000 and assure you of that. Never said cricket was played in November so I dont know what your talking about there, and plus all of the those attendances there are still way more that what you have to compete with, so I dont really know where your going with that comment Mark.?

I would be more worried about the Tigers than Nottingham the way its going or you may have a right clash of allegiance next season.

Dont try and change the subject because youve just been proved wrong, the Tigers will do what they do, you dont need to worry about them.

I can assure you that I am not TriColour, as in a previous thread I was commenting on how rude he/she was, and the reason I registered 2 days ago was because I was reading through the threads on here (like I do with most teams) and I couldnt believe some of the toxicity of the comments that I was reading. As Ive stated before Im a Tigers fan, so I thought I would give a neutrals perspective on the game, and from that I got bombarded with comments saying that what I was saying I good view on the game, but in cov fans eyes, wrong. And that is what is exactly happening here, Mark made A comment that was not true, and I just stepped in to correct him with some facts, but again I get replys saying Im basically wrong. I have NEVER come across a fans forum that is as toxic as this before, both in prem and champ.

What a pair of plonkers. You have both forgotten to mention netball. A huge participation sport. The other week at least 7 people watched my daughters game. A great game and everyone had a couple of drinks and a good laugh in the club afterwards. Sport . Where we make friends for life.

The figures i quoted were from the green king stats for this season. The football attendances from the F.A.
So im wrong... If so take it up with the officials.

The disrespectful noise , laughing and shouting when our kicker was attempting conversions is probably only on cup nights too i imagine.
I guess thats why we didnt kick for posts at penalties and take 5 points
( am joking on that last sentence before you get Robins bow and arrow out)
Although you are from Leicester. ... Or a Nottingham resident supporting a premiership team as priority...
We have some of those "glory" hunters in Coventry too , for the short term anyway

What do you mean by glory hunters, and plus any good kicker (like maisey is) should be able to put up with noises in the background. And as I said before, everytime you comment on this forum you always get some snide comment back trying to put you down, even from supposed admin members.

Come on chaps... this isn't what rugby is all about....! Everyone is entitled to a view, and I for one am always interested in neutrals views. They are usually more accurate than my one eyed perspective. So just enjoy reading the comments, learn that the world is not perfect, and enjoy!

Cov's average attendance of around 1900 is nothing to write home about... I had hoped it would rise in the Championship but.....it has a little but not significantly. Having said that the BPA atmosphere is great, and I love going there. As one London Scottish player said after the recent match there, the crowd feel as though they are on top of you!!

I hope Cov can play well and win on Saturday. Come on COV.

Seconded!

Gents, we're better than this.

Let me just confirm a couple of things.

Ben Duckworth isn't Tricolour as far as I can tell. The postings are from different IPs, which are captured, with no crossover. And yes, you can spoof IP addresses, and no I really haven't met many people involved in Rugby who could be bothered to try (or less politely, would know how). smiling smiley

Ben's a little off with his average attendances, but so what. What I see from looking at the clubs is actually a remarkable similarity in the plans to make them sustainable and similar pressures in each City from forces elsewhere.

Tricolour wound a few people up, possibly inadvertently because he's got the internet equivalent of a tin ear, or maybe for kicks because he had nowt better to do. Who knows, but either way he seems to have gone now - let's not assume anyone else new is here purely to slag the club off, or the forum will have even fewer new posters.

I've always found Nottingham to be a friendly enough place, and though I've never been to the rugby there I've had a good few days out at Forest and Trent Bridge. I'd wish their rugby club nothing but success, except of course if it were at our expense. winking smiley

Remember, 'tis the Season of good will to all men, etc.

Cheers,

Russ.
