RFC 48 Loughborough Students 22 - Cov make it 12 wins...

Christmas will be full of cheer for Coventry after a 12th straight victory which lifted them into second place in the National League One table.

Another seven tries and the news that Rosslyn Park had been beaten at Blackheath sent the fans home happy and full of optimism for the New Year.

But it was far from a cut and dried exercise against a Loughborough side which, happy to run the ball from every angle, battled back from 17-0 down to turn round all-square at 17-17 and threatened to spoil the festivities as Cov overdid the seasonal generosity.

Cov’s indomitable spirit came through in time and Loughborough’s resistance was finally broken in the last 25 minutes which saw the hosts run in three tries to put the outcome beyond all doubt.

But after scoring three unanswered tries in the opening quarter and with their scrum totally dominant, Cov were guilty of being demob happy a bit too early – prompting a cautionary word from head coach Scott Morgan.

“It wasn’t exactly what I expected,” said Morgan. “Honestly, I’m delighted with the scoreboard, but I'm a little bit disappointed – we forced it a bit and defensively showed a bit of frailty if I’m honest.

“We gave the boys Tuesday off to rest up, but we can’t give them time off if they are going to switch off in their minds.

“When we wanted to light it up today we could and we showed the class we have got, but then we just switched off and let them come back and we can’t do that if we want to be challenging at the top of the league.

"We’ve got to stay on it mentally and remain focused.

“I’m not being too negative, it’s a great result, five points and we keep marching on, but if we want to win this league we’ve got to improve week on week and we’ve got to treat every game like a top of the league game if we really want to charge on.

”We’ve got lots to work on.”

Can someone clarify, please?
When a try was scored down in Kurt's Corner near the end of the game, JB announced it as the hat trick try for Dan Rundle, but he's credited with only two tries. It would seem that the try I'm talking about was scored by Will Hurrell.

Thanks Tom. Standing over on the other side (Old Statler insists on standing) the PA system is pretty indistinct and JB's voice sounded like he'd had the inevitable dreaded lurgi on his chest all week.

I blame the PA, and the bloke driving it John - and that Charlie Bravo bloke that definitely got it wrong - which caused me to text the final score wrongly to Old Nick in darkest Norfolk! See the knock-on misery you cause? winking smiley
Happy Christmas!

Oh happy day's have a good Christmas yourself Steve.

RE Moonie, will pass it on. He actually told me on the phone this morning they had to resort to the Mexican Wave which as he said didn't suggest at the time the action was riveting.
