Don't send us to Coventry: ‘Keep Wasps RFC in London’ petition set up by supporters of the rugby club.

A petition has been set up by supporters of Premiership rugby side Wasps to oppose the relocation of their club to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Wasps fan Alexander Hayton has set up the online petition which has gathered around 500 signatures since it was set up on September 14.

The ‘Keep Wasps RFC in / around London’ petition can be found at www.thepetitionsite.com and calls plans to move the traditionally London-based club away from the area a “betrayal”.

The Telegraph has revealed Wasps are in the final stages of securing a £30million deal to takeover Ricoh Arena operating firm ACL - jointly owned by Coventry City Council and the Alan Edward Higgs Charity.

Councillors, taxpayers and supporters of Coventry City FC, which currently occupies the Ricoh, have been split by the move which could be agreed by the local authority at a full council meeting on Tuesday.

The petition reads: “Wasps RFC (formerly London Wasps) has been based in/around London since its inception in 1867.

“However, recent rumours have linked the club with a number of new locations further afield, including (but not limited to) the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

“We, the undersigned, feel that any attempt to move the club further away from its London home would be a betrayal of the fanbase.

“While we understand the need for the very best facilities and for favourable commercial partnerships, we wish to express our concern and frustration at Wasps RFC’s failure to reassure its fans that it does not plan to move further away from London. We also wish to express our opposition to any such move.

“It was Wasps fans who filled Adam’s Park on the final day of the 2011/12 season against Newcastle Falcons, and they deserve to be treated better than they have been by the club of late.”
