New Coventry signing Roan van Heerden says he wants to repay the faith coach Scott Morgan has shown by bringing him to the UK.

The South African arrived in Coventry a week ago and brings with him experience of having played in the Currie Cup for the Leopards.

More recently the 29-year-old has played Sevens and combined that with his work as a financial advisor having spent five years in the British army.

But he is over in the UK to do a Masters in International Development and also add some bulk to a Coventry pack that has lacked go-forward in some recent games.

“I have just got to play to the best of my ability and hope I can be the player they hope they have signed. I am definitely looking forward to it,” van Heerden said.

“It’s been a while since I last played XVs, probably a year-and-a-half ago, so hopefully I’ll be forgiven for any rustiness.

“But I can’t wait to get started, my fitness is good and it’s just down to the coaches when I can get involved.”

Indeed, van Heerden turned down a move to the Southern Kings so that he could come to England to study. He could also be excused for taking some time to acclimatise having come from the South African summer to the waterlogged West Midlands.
