Middlesbrough are awaiting a decision from Martin O'Neill regarding their vacant managers' position. The Ulsterman held talks with Boro chairman Steve Gibson at the club's training ground on Friday afternoon and is the favourite to become Steve McClaren's successor. According to the Times, discussions between the two men were "enthusiastic and enjoyable" but Alan Curbishley still remains a strong candidate if O'Neill decides against a return to management just now.

The former Leicester City and Celtic manager has also been linked with North-East rivals Sunderland as well as Nottingham Forest but the lure of Teesside could be too strong with the prospect of transfer funds and an excellent youth set-up.

O'Neill has been out of work since May 2005 after leaving Parkhead to concentrate on looking after his sick wife.

Meanwhile Middlesbrough midfielder George Boateng is expected to agree a three-year contact extension while the club continue to compete with Aston Villa and Wigan for young Newcastle winger James Milner.
