Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate is spoilt for choice over his team's defence for the Barclays Premiership trip to Manchester City on Monday.

With England international Jonathan Woodgate and £6million signing Robert Huth both fit and Austrian Emanuel Pogatetz in fine form, Southgate has three central defenders from which to choose, even without the injured Chris Riggott and youngster Matthew Bates.

"They have made the decision very difficult for me. But you would rather have that sort of problem than not know who to put in because people are out of form.

"I am spoilt for choice. The three of them in the matches they have played have been exceptional. Whoever is picked has to keep reproducing that type of form."

Boro found themselves under some pressure after successive Premiership defeats by Blackburn and Sheffield United in the wake of their Carling Cup exit at the hands of lowly Notts County.

However, league wins over high-flying Everton and the Magpies, against whom they rode their luck before Aiyegbeni Yakubu's late header, have eased them into 12th place in the table.

Southgate, who is only a few months into his managerial reign, has been delighted with the way his players have responded to his work on the training pitch.

He said: "We feel the last few weeks have been a lot more positive for us. I would not say we felt pressure before, but it's nice to have got the wins.

"Wins change perceptions of so many things. The points obviously move you up the table and it confirms the work we have been doing on the training pitch.

"We want to be as high up the table as we can. We have players in good form, there is competition for places all over the field now and we had got to keep working hard and looking for more and more improvement."

Boro were dealt a blow at the weekend when Australian striker Mark Viduka broke a toe against Newcastle and will be sidelined for several weeks.

Southgate does not have a big pool of front men and it would be no surprise if he fielded just Yakubu in attack at City with perhaps Jason Euell or Fabio Rochemback slotting in behind.
