The takeover that was imminent now might not happen until Christmas, or possible January, or maybe some time later. Given we were told last year that the takeover would be completed in the New Year, then before the end of the season and then before the start of this season, supporters might be feeling somewhat unsure about what the future timetable is.
This may not matter much. Ownership doesn’t impact the team you support. Look at Newcastle, or Liverpool, or Everton. Ownership is a side issue for these clubs so maybe we should take a leaf out of their books.
Hang on though, aren’t we meant to be rooted in our local community? If that’s the case how the club is owned is of crucial importance. It is unlikely that foreign owners would undertake the heritage of the club and the important links we have to the local area. In some countries, such as America, sports ownership is simply the franchising of a brand. Tampa Bay Rovers dont have to play in Tampa Bay, it’s just a brand name.
It might be possible that a ‘golden share’ could get around these problems. However, it’s also possible that the golden share holders could be ignored, or voted off the Board, if their resistance to change was deemed to be destructive. It has been suggested that the Golden Share might not even be legal because it reduces the influence of all other ordinary share holders. This may seem like an academic argument but it isn’t. It is a point of law rooted in good governance practices and the law surrounding business conduct.
Here we are then. Possibly a little further forward but more likely not. It took Peter Johnson many years to sell Tranmere, even then it was to someone with strong ties to the Club. Mark Palios is reportedly keen to sell, but you need buyers who have the ability to run the club as a going concern. It might still be the case that the way forward for the club is fan ownership.
It’s unclear what the impact of this uncertainty is having on our players. Results have not been going well. We have picked up 1 point from 9 available. Relegation form. This is a sharp contrast to how the season started. We have some key players out injured, but a club should be able to weather those problems. We also have plenty of time to turn things around. This could simply be a blip, but what’s behind the blip needs more explanation.
In a sea of uncertainty there is us the supporters. We continue to back the team as much as we can. I am sure everybody wishes things were different, unfortunately wishful thinking may not be enough.
