Yesterday wasn’t great, was it? It almost felt as if Adkins had returned with a level of incompetence that was all too familiar. Yet two events, before the game was 10 minutes old, demonstrated why we need to maintain some perspective.
The first was the impeccably observed minutes silence for the Hillsborough dead. We might come away from football matches frustrated, fuming about the ref, complaining that the players we worshipped have become donkeys. On 15 April 1989 96 fans had no such luxury. A trip to watch their idols ended in tragedy. 36 years on the campaign for justice continues.
Then, in the 7th minute, there was a minutes applause for Joe Thompson. Joe played for us, Bury, Carlisle and Rochdale. I remember him as a graceful player, who always put i in a shift. He was 36 years old. Way too young, but he worked tirelessly to raise awareness of leukaemia in his long battle against the illness. The applause seemed heartfelt as it echoed around the ground.
A word of praise too for the Doncaster supporters who maintained their silence and clapped along respectfully. Football is a family, and for a few brief minutes they reminded us of the ties that bind us.
Now there are three games left. Yes, it’s tense, frustrating, nerve wracking and so much more. We though are the lucky ones, we get to see another game, talk through the highs and lows of more matches. Some are not so lucky.
Perspective.
