Elliot - sing his praises.

ET often explained to Elliot, the little kid who communicated with him best, that he needed to get home. Whilst Mr Nevitt is not an extra-terrestrial, he is still pretty phenomenal. His progress over his first professional season has been impressive. Shouldn't we be excited about what lies ahead?
My first concern is that if we don't go up other clubs will come in for him. He's not the finished package yet, he's getting there though. His work rate is reminiscent of Norwood. Against Port Vale he worked hard at the back, not just in going forward.
He's also a bit like Tigger, he gets kicked but bounces back up. It's somewhat amazing really. Which brings me to my second concern, injury. Players like Nevitt need to say injury free, and minor niggles can have a long term impact. Increasingly he will be targeted by more industrial defenders at this level. His movement is such that kicking him is one of the few ways he can be stopped.
Recently he has been kept out of the starting XI by Glatzell. There's a part of me that understands this. We must be paying something towards Glatzell's loan cost, and it would be a waste to keep him on the bench. Yet Elliot is a long term prospect here, capable of becoming a legend for the club. There are other young players at the club who must also find this frustrating, so he's not alone. I just hope that we see enough of Nevitt to stop him becoming frustrated.
Right now though, I'm just enjoying watching his enthusiasm and application. It was a gamble to sign him, or rather a calculated risk. Now, I like risk taking, sometimes, at our level, you have to take them. We haven't got a bottomless pit of money, and when you see the club using resources well it gives you hope. Some might say that signing Mani D was a sign of a risk not paying off, the compensation is Nevitt.
I have a dream, it's the final day of the season, away at Orient. We need a win to go up. It's 2-2 in the 75th minute. Elliot comes,on, runs rings around their defence, and in injury time, bangs the ball into the back of the net from a Kieron Morris pass. The old and the new combine. We go up, Elliot finishes the first chapter in becoming a legend for us, but the best is yet to come.

He plays when he is available because he is our best forward by a country mile, not because of any loan deal.

He has undoubtedly improved with game time, as the season progresses, but IMO he is not our best forward by a country mile, as you put it.
When fit, he is a valuable addition to the team.
Hemmings is proven and has miles on the clock left, he could lead the line alone or play alongside another striker. Maynard was proven but has no miles left. Nevitt looks at best a tier 4 target man who we may need to leave behind hopefully. Jolley is a bit early to tell yet but his lightweight issues need to be addressed by him being cuter and avoiding battles. Glatzel has classy touches and an eye for openings few of ours share, however his potential for tier 2 or 3 does not really transfer to lower levels.
In brief forwards remain our weak suit, much better than with Mani up top (ffs), time to pack midfield.
If he ends up with around 8 goals by the end of the season it will compare well with that of the first season of many who went on to be effective strikers.
His commitment and improving fitness all point to a springboard for getting better. It is daft to compare him with Hemmings. After 300 odd games Hemming is not going to get better.There are many reasons to think that Nevitt will

I was seriously impressed with Nevitt's post Northampton match interview. His determination to improve his game whilst showing commendable modesty showed what a fine young man and credit to the club he is. Does anyone else of my generation see a similarity with John Manning, I think Nevitt is going to be a Tranmere great, if we can hold onto him.

Had Norwood been in the same situation for the first goal Nevitt scored, it would have been 95% certain he would have missed. So credit to him. And for the way he went through the Mansfield defence for the second. And Mansfield have conceded around 1 goal a game so defensively very good.
Nevitt got a bit lucky on his second he should have hit it with his left as he was wide of the defender. By stepping inside he had two defenders in front of him, somehow he rocketed it through them and past an unsuspecting keeper who just flapped. Not sure it is recipe in the long term?
The first was a great finish but for me his best action was even later. He chased a bouncing ball which two defenders were shepherding back to the keeper. He got in the way of one them, the other sped off wide with the ball who he overtook and gained possession. Hemmings came to help and what should have been back in our half from a keeper clearance, we had the ball by their box, killing their comeback effort.
Hemmings was completely out on his feet.
With absences growing bit hard to know what is best tomorrow. We still haven't got any forward understanding. I'd be tempted to start with Hemmings and bring Nevitt on at half time. Maybe Foley start with us down to two wingers. Hawkes remains predictable but Macca creates little but covers defensively well, we need a win though.
Tomorrow we have the midfield four bar Morris sorted, it is question who replaces Glatzel. I'd even start with Nevitt bring Hemmings on. All very well convincing yourself two up front is attacking but when they are incapable to passing to each other it really isn't.

Norwood had issues when he started with us but not in the promotion campaigns. I wouldn't hang on every word our commentators utter although I don't get to hear the home matches anyway
I did watch most games he played in ;0)
