Tranmere's Under 18's side progress to the third round of the FA Youth Cup with a deserved victory over Shrewsbury Town......
Tranmere's Under 18 side tonight booked their place in the third round of the FA Youth Cup with a deserved 3-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town Under 18's at Prenton Park.
The two teams had quite different methods of booking their place in the second round with Rovers coming from behind at Boundary Park to beat Oldham Athletic 2-1 thanks to a winning goal from Lewis Moynes whilst the visitors thrashed Lincoln City 7-0. The two teams also met just ten days ago in the Youth Alliance League at Tranmere's Raby Vale training ground with Rovers winning 2-1 on that occasion.
Shrewsbury started this game the better side and had a couple of early chances including a clearance off the line by the Rovers to take the lead with Rovers youngsters struggling to get a hold on the game.
It was the visitors who perhaps deservedly took the lead when the Tranmere defence fell asleep on a free kick and the ball was pumped to the back post. The shot on goal looked to have been cleared off the line but the referees assistant flagged to signal a goal and the Shrews celebrations began!
Rovers began to improve with Ben Jago looking solid in the centre of midfield and they deservedly drew level with what turned out to be the last kick of the first half when Omotola was set free and slipped the ball under the advancing Shrewsbury goalkeeper Ashton to equalise.
The second half was a totally different affair to the first half with Tranmere going for it from the off and within five minutes of the restart they were ahead. Sam Illesamni worked his way past the Town defenders into the penalty areas and slotted the ball past Ashton.
Within five minutes it was 3-1 as winger Darren Askew shot from 25 yards and the ball deflected off a defender and looped over Ashton into the net.
From then onwards Rovers were fairly comfortable in the game making two substitutions with Jake Hulley replacing Omotola and later in the game Akpan replacing Illesanmi.
Rovers will now face either Northampton Town or Mansfield Town away in the 3rd round with those two teams facing each other a next Tuesday (25th November) to decide who hosts Shaun Garnett's side.
The youth team are at home to Accrington Stanley on Saturday morning at 11am at Tranmere's training ground in Raby Vale.

An excellent result and must have a decent chance to progress through the next round
How come none of these players cant get into the first team, instead of getting people on loan use our reserve or youth players ??

Evan Gumbs came off the bench last week, I would think the manager thinks none of these players are yet ready for the 1st team

Got to be better than that display today
I would rather 1 on of our youngsters given a couple of games than a youngster from prem/championship
