Very much an indication as to the present plight.
I am hoping he is the new John James, rather than Mark Hilditch / Barry Wellings.
This summer's budget led recruitment really has the feeling of the mid 80s (remember Worthy promised us a similar brand of football - and delivered until Clayton left)

Having had a look at his goal scoring record - it may just be a ruse, with RE planning to play him at centre half.
Struggles to reach double figures for a season (4 in 72- Barnsley, 11 in 101 Colchester, 30 -150 Cheltenham, 5-42 Rotherham).

looks a fairly decent addition, powerful which is what we will need to take all the ankle kickers on in league 2 i guess

Worthy delivered a similar brand of football. I can recall successive home games in the same week finishing 3-3 and 3-4. Sadly he threw all his resources at our forwards and our defence was worse than useless. I don't think we're quite at the same stage now, but pounds per week are king when it comes to recruiting players so it will be bargain bin hunting all off-season.

Always has been a decent player. Strong, holds the ball well and brings others into the game, possibly the reason for his pretty poor goals per game ratio.

Good addition IMO,will help Cole and Richards and could be the foil needed depending on the system RE plays.

A decent player with experience, but the goalscoring ratio at some clubs isn't stellar, though at some it's quite good.

I presume he may have been used at Colchester as a wide man sometimes, as 11 in 101 games isn't fantastic reading, even if you accounted for an estimation of 10-15 assists, that's a ratio of between around 1 every 3.8 - 5 games, so if he had sometimes played out wide that would account for why he didn't score hat fulls for them.

Hopefully he can fit in and do well.

I always quite liked Mark Hillditch though I take your point. He would have played up front with Owen Brown, what a strike force ......hmmm maybe not (they were ok in a poor side then).

To be fair, he has played against Rovers a few times, and of those only impressed the once.

Last time I looked, people were able to express an opinion based on fact.....rather than assuming that as soon as somebody put on a white shirt they were demi gods.

We are a League 2 Club with very little cash, were hardly going to be signing any Household Names or International Superstars are we?

Let's have a bit of faith in the new manager and trust in the players he chooses to bring in.

People are so quick to dismiss players without even seeing what they can do.

We haven't played a single game under the new manager yet, and already the experts are out slagging off our choice of Summer Signings.

Get behind your team FFS! and judge whether or not they are worthy or not at the end of next season!

Everyone's entitled to there own opinion, it's going to be our money paying there wage, like I said hope he does well obviously but his signing doesn't excite me!!

I think you will find that we have already demonstrated our faith, by buying season tickets.
FFS stop slagging off anyone who expresses an opinion which doesn't suggest that we are going to walk the league next season, keep a clean sheet every game, have the top scorer in the division, and that RE will walk the manager of the year award.

Don't imagine that in all of our dreams that is the scenario for next year, but then we wake up and some of us live in the real world.

If a horse was rated 250-1 for the Derby, a change in jockey would not be enough to win the race, likewise a change in club will not change some of the players into better players than those we might otherwise have signed.

I don't think that slagging off our recent signings before they've even kicked a ball in a Rovers shirt is a very productive way of showing your support, S.T Holder or not.

Assuming that they actually want to come here and play for us on the low wages were offering them?

I agree that we have to give players time and a chance. I understand the trepidation but thinking back, Scott Taylor is a great example, he couldn't hit a barn door when playing for TR and no doubt Blackpool fans were up in arms when he signed for them but what a season he had. You never know until you give them a chance.

My fear is that the signings will again lead to Cole being sidelined.
Someone who is hungry (not Akinfenwa - pun!) Odejayi is exactly the journeyman whom we we assured would no longer feature. Had he historically been a 10-15 goals a season player then fine, but he has struggled to score in the past, as has Richards.

Pez - I would respect you opinions if you backed them up with justified argument - you need to support your comments, not just question the support of others.

Majority of comments critical of KO also expressed the hope he would succeed, but suggested that given past form, this was unlikely. There were no personal attacks on him, he was not slagged off. You say that players have been dismissed without having seen them play - yet in many instances we have seen them play for the opposition on more than one ocassion, which allows us to form an opinion.Doubtless there may well be a triallist released after just one appearance, yet no questions will be asked.
Remember that young lad from Hartlepool, who single handedly ran the back line ragged two season ago, left to a standing ovation - nobody would be critical of a signing like that, because he would be judged on that game, the same is true to a certain extent of KO,as he has struggled to make an impact previously, on our defence or others.

Perhaps if more were able to do so, or pay in full for theirs, then the playing budget would enable us to get the better players - I know not everyone can, but I know that I am doing my bit.

My opinions are exactly that, I don't expect you to agree with me, and quite frankly don't really care.

You make a statement that we should have gone for Ngoo.
How do you know we didn't try and get him? Players like Ngoo would probably not entertain a move to Tranmere, and I doubt if we could match his wage demands.

We would all love to see quality players coming through the doors, however, we don't have the money to fund such a luxury.

You're writing off our new signings based on your opinion, but obviously Rob Edwards sees enough in these players to offer them a contract.

So, either you know the game better than Rob Edwards and are 100% correct, or you're just arrogant and think everyone elses opinion counts for diddly squat?

I don't know whether we went for Ngoo, but happy to wager that we will not get promotion, or even get in the play offs. as much as it pains me to say so (the difference between realism and blind faith).
Also predict that any triallists will merely sit on the bench, and that money spent on them would be better spent on one decent player.


I notice that you failed to address the question of supporting your opinions. I am happy to respect them if you can justify them, but as previously it appears that you view messages from the manager and club as sacrosant, not to be questioned or challenged.

The problem is some people do write players off and sometimes make assumptions based on little knowledge.

Someone came on here once and criticised Sam Morrow for scoring 3 in 30 for Hibs, then was told by Matt The Rover that most of Morrow's appearances were off the bench, yet he had never played against Tranmere nor had he even had one game on trial, but someone still saw fit to read something, probably wikipedia and declare him poor, instead of saying oh but he's scored 4 in 4 for the NI u-21's, which could indicate he might be good.

He wasn't used properly by Parry and may have done better had it been so, but people are too quick to judge and seeing them play for someone else can be deceptive, because it doesn't prove if the person would be any good playing for Tranmere or not.

After all other teams have different methods and therefore one teams poor player is another teams good player.

I still believe any signing has the right to be judged positively until performances dictate otherwise, as opposed to being judged negatively by what it says on Wikipedia, or Transfermarkt, or Soccerbase.

As for Ngoo, maybe Tranmere are trying to sign him as we speak, or maybe they tried and failed, or maybe they have not tried yet or won't, but if they signed him I'd be fine with that.

As for his wages he was probably on cheap wages initially so doubt he'd be walking in asking for several thousands per week.

By the way children I thought Odejayi proved a real handful
for our defence in the FAC tie away at Accrington Stanley,and lead the line well.
Let's hope he forms an effective striking pairing for us and hopefully we may sign another striker come July????

I am looking forward to the new season.

New Manager, new ideas and new players.

I know we have no Superstars, but until we see the new look side play, we are merely guessing how good or bad this new crop of players will actually perform for us.

Not sure if we'll see anymore newbies coming in, as the general impression I got from earlier club statements is that there was only ever going to be about 5 new faces coming in.

There will be lots of unemployed players available from next week, so who knows? Maybe he might pick up one or two more to give us a bit of competition for places?

Could do with another defender and possibly a utility player to give us more options, but it comes back to how much R.E has at his disposal I guess?

Does anyone know whats happening over any possible Creswell move? That would generate a few more coffers for R.E's treasure chest if that were to materialise.

Creswell is always linked with a move but nothings happened before, we can only hope he goes for a decent amount of money but I wouldn't bank on it.

Why do people keep referring to the budget as to the reason we can't sign better quality or bigger name signings, has anyone got any actual facts regarding the budget? I know we are not the richest of clubs in the league and the budget obviously would of been cut when we were relegated but after losing the so called higher earners in Wallace, robbo, Lowe, Taylor plus getting rid of Goodison, mooney, JLAA and Sodje surely we can invest in 1 or 2 bigger names who will require a bigger wage. Let's not forget we got compo for Wallace and the money for Lowe that was supposingly going back into the budget even if it was the reported 50k we could of put that into signing a quality striker at this level who would want say 2k a week. Unless the reason is because the budget has been drastically cut, I don't think the signings so far are good enough for us to be promotion contenders.

Valid point well made, especially when viewed against the perceived budgets/attendances of other clubs.
Only aspect which should be incorporated is that PJ will not underwrite any losses this year, so we assume a much more cautious budget and cash flow, with the need to hold some rainy day monies and also the annual reduction to the bank debt.

my gut feeling is that the squad he's getting together, coupled (most importantly) with Rob's attacking/young ethos, is actually giving us a team that would have done better even in league one last season let alone 2 this. But then i am burned to a crisp by 40 years of trfc watching and the endless optimism it brings.

The budget is believed to be around £1 million.

If we sign a player on a £2k per week contract thats £104k a year, that equates to 10% of the entire budget.

Because Peter Johnson refuses to bankroll the club anymore, we need to balance the books and only spend what we have.

I doubt we'll be signing anyone on a £2k a week contract until we get a new Sugar Daddy.

We need to recruit young talented players and develop them into good players, and maybe one or two of these will generate decent fees to keep the club ticking over.

Reading between the lines, this seems to be the Master Plan for now.

Don't know about Master Plan Pez, I think that's the only plan. Signings will be young unproven players with maybe a little bit of experience here or there if we are lucky (i.e. no one else wants them and they are prepared to come here for next to nothing). It's just the way it is. No-one particularly likes it. My Rovers experience has virtually come full circle. I only say virtually because we are not quite Osterman-era desperate yet.

I understand what your saying pez but the best chance of us going back up is for us to sign a striker with a proven track record of scoring goals, if we would of kept Lowe he probably would of been our highest earner on around 1000-1500 a week, now he's gone that wage plus the money we got for him should of been put to signing a striker with abut more quality than we've got. It would not of made no difference to the current budget if we spent 2k per week an even if it does use 10% of it,it would be money well spent. We'l probably end up with squad players who hardly play like sodje, Baggie, horwood last year who take 6,7,800 a week.Bury have probably spent a lot of there budget on Lowe because they know they need goals to go up and I see them challenging for the league because of this. I hope am wrong an odejayi gets us 30 goals or RE will hopefully sign a player we get excited about!

£2,000 a week could possibly work in league 1, but in league 2 it won't unless you're teams like Portsmouth this season, Fleetwood last season or Bradford before that.

I think gambling on such cost wouldn't work. If it was a player earning that much at a club like Notts County or Bradford, who have higher earners and keep such a player on the bench, then Tranmere could get one on a 40%-50% loan deal perhaps and that might work, paying £800-£1,000 for a loan player, but I just feel spending £2,000 a week wouldn't be viable, especially if the player was injured a bit too much, or just didn't settle in.

The club can't afford to spend around 10.4% of the budget on one player I don't think. I think the best they could do is limit an individual wage to around 8% tops, which would be roughly £1,500 a week and even that could be viewed as little too much by the hierarchy.

I don't even think Teams in league 2 need to spend that much to be honest to get high performers. I think it's possible Akinfenwa wasn't earning above £1,500 a week when he scored 17 for Northampton and I reckon pope wasn't getting more than that for Port Vale in their promotion season.
