Tranmere winger called up on to international duty

Article Header - Breaking News

Tranmere Rovers winger Adam McGurk has been called into the Northern Ireland squad for their international friendly against Malta on February 6th.

McGurk, who has represented his country at youth level, could make his debut in the match as although he has previously been put on stand-by duty by boss Michael O'Neill, he has has never been called upto the final 23-man squad.

The call for the former Aston Villa man, who turned 23 yesterday, comes thanks to a fantastic run of form that saw the Tranmere number 11, who scored a sensational winner to secure Tranmere a crucial 2-1 victory against Brentford last weekend.

McGurk is joined by two other League One players in the squad, the previously uncapped Bury goalkeeper Trevor Carson and Walsall striker Will Grigg, who made his debut against the Netherlands last summer.

Crucially for Rovers gaffer Ronnie Moore, McGurk, who has netted four times for the club this season, will not miss any first team matches during his international call.

Some fans still haven't warmed to McGurk, but I've been impressed with his game input over second half of the season and reckon NI are sensible having a look at him..... some real skill there I reckon.

As important it's another message to players that TRFC is a good place to be and opportunities come for their players - look at Ash..... how long before a run with Wales after good U21 displays?

I have a suspicion Ash will be in the Wales squad for their friendly against Austria on the same date. He hasn't been named in their U21 squad afterall

Good stuff! should improve his game on the international scene. Dont think fans are idiots that moan, i think he can be frustrating as times when its clear to see he should make a pass rather than selfishly have wild efforts at the goal, at home in particular.

He has got talent just needs tweaking a bit id say

Well done though!

I think he sets a good example because he never hides, always wants the ball and keeps trying things even when he gets criticised by the crowd. I hope he succeeds. I was really pleased for him getting that nice winner last week - though you could argue he made the wrong decision there too! As a recent convert to TRFC with my boy I can't believe that there's any grumbling at all with the team top of the leage - but some do get the knife into McGurk. He seems to be invloved in most attacking and is one reason Tranmere look like scoring everytime they have the ball (which I think they do).
