Exeter City v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

By Deadly Submarine
November 25 2011

If you can't make Tranmere's game away at Exeter City on Saturday afternoon, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend......

Article Header - Match Discussion

For those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, particularly the more costly and time consuming southern away games, we at Total Tranmere will be providing a Match Discussion Thread on the Site for every Rovers game.

The thread will allow you to discuss everything from the pre-match build up and starting line-up to the game it as it progresses and the post-match analysis.

Celebration 2010 (Enoch)

Where possible, Total Tranmere staff will post up the starting line-up and substitutes on the thread as soon as it is made known at the game as well as a half-time report on how the game is going for the benefit of those who are unable to make it.

Tranmere of course travel to Exeter City on Saturday afternoon in NPower League One so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been along to the game.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Admin staff will try and add the team and updates on the game on this thread where possible whilst there will also be our usual update service from our Twitter feed @totaltranmere so if you are not already following us it may be worth doing so!

Worst league defeat of the year so far beaten 3-0 with no reply
thing`s will have to change for the next one against M.K Dons another defeat in that match will push us further down the league down to 12th now, lose the next one league position will push us to around 15th. So we lost this one not good but during the season up till now it`s games that we have played well but not scored in that`s been at fault and now the fact of our poor fire power is now coming home to roost.(Sm95)

These Hollies' lyrics sound very appropriate:-

Here I go again.I cannot help it.Here I go again.Making the same mistakes, heading for more heartaches. What can I do when there's nothing I can do?I looked in your eyes and I knew that I was blue.
What 's the use?I'll just give in.Try as I may,and I do,I'll never win, never win, baby I'll never win.

A very poor result we are slipping down the table at an alarming rate and have lost 5 out of our last 6 games.

The lack of firepower was glossed over earlier in the season as we went conceding many goals but now that we are conceding it becomes ever more obvious.

A bothersome result. I still can't believe how they didn't get at least one goal, with enough chances on target to net at least once.

The team can recover though, but perhaps Les should start to think about two upfront.

I can think of tactics Les could use, but I suspect he won't.

1. (4-4-2)

Baxter, Akins

Robinson, Labadie, Welsh, Devaney

Buchanan, Goodison, Taylor, Raven.

Rachubka

2. (4-3-1-2)

McGurk, Akins

Baxter

Robinson, Welsh, Devaney

Buchanan, Goodison, Taylor, Raven

Rachubka.

I'm assuming that next week neither Weir or Showunmi will be available, hence not including them.

Weir was banned for todays game but is available for the MK Dons game.

There is very little chance of Les changing the system as waht we play is his preferred system and he rarely changes from it even though its obvious we dont score enough.

As for the play offs we wont get near them the way we play.

The way we play is we are set up to keep a game tight and take the lead and hold onto it. When we go a goal behind we never win.

Les has his tactics and formation and regardless of the result does not change formation( with the exception of Goody going up front for the last few minutes).

Les said the other day i dont like to change things when you are beaten, think that says it all really.

As for turning on the team, im just voicing my opinion on here (which is what the site is for). I will continue to support the team at the match as im a season ticket holder. Just because i dont agree with those who think we have a chance of making the play offs doesnt meen i cant make my point.

Utter waste of money. Worst game of the season by a long way and second half we were pub team standard.

Can't believe a professional football team can give the ball away so much.

The only positive is we're probably a little bit better than Northampton.

Have to agree with Mikey. We outplayed them for a spell in first half but otherwise were awful.

The defence as a whole were abysmal and the keeper although spilling an early cross made three great saves!

I disagree with some of them, particuarly harsh on both subs who never had any real chance to impact the game, giving them 1 is stupidly harsh imo.

Les said the other day i dont like to change things when you are beaten, think that says it all really.

There is some method in that madness though. He could attempt to go more attacking concede more goals and do worse.

To necessarily make a change after a result like that could be seen as either necessary or a kneejerk reaction.

After all the Colchester result was a pretty decent showing and so was the Sheffield Wednesday result and the Scunthorpe result was partly cultivated by some poor refereeing.

The one thing to consider would be putting 2 upfront and getting a similar level of scoring, because you wouldn't be automatically guaranteed to suddenly sharpen up and net more goals.

The only other potential forward options not used yet are Baxter and possibly Robbo.

Howegver Les's comment about not changing things when you lose, would make sense if he'd lost after a 3 or 4 game winning run, but I'm not overly bothered about the cup stuff, it's the league stuff that's important now and so far apart from a very ropey loss, the previous one was a decent showing against a very big form side and the previous game was probably as close to 3 points as a game can get, because they had enough on target shots to steal it.

His main problem now is to either experiment, or give the system another 2-3 games, then revamp depending on results, but if he experiements, he does run the risk of disrupting the team slightly and if he lost another couple of games on the spin, he could be slighted more by fans, whereas if he got 4-6 points from the next 2 games, the team would be back on track, so it's a difficult call and it will be a difficult thing for him to keep the teams focus as solid as some of them have claimed it is before now.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

but is the goals scored down to the way we play ?? or the goals we aint scored, even Saturday our attempts on goal and even corners were better than the home side, tho they commited more fowls ! this aint the first time that we have pelted the opostions goal ! not sure that the system we play is to blame ! so, that means the players ! well we aint got huge squad nor the dosh to buy in ! so may be we must just get behind the lads

In answer to your question yes.

Pelted the opposition goal-don't make me laugh!

We lost 3-0-attempts on goal and corners mean nothing if we don't score. Our second half performance has been likened to a 'pub team standard'-says it all really.

Burrows

We had 1 seriously threatening goal-scoring chance on Saturday - just the one. From Akins and he failed to even work the 'keeper!

We need to accept the fact we were shoite on saturday, and we need to massively improve for our next game in 2 months.

December is arguably the biggest month of our season if no games are postponed.

Have a bad month and we are in another relegation scrap.. have a good month and we still have an outside chance of play-offs. My personal expectation is to finish in the top 12 like.. which is achievable.

Saturday was an absolutely disgraceful result. Bearing in mind they played extra time in the week, and we had a full week to prepare for the game, it is shocking.

Another defeat, another game without a goal. We are fast on the slide and it is worrying. I never believed we would get in the playoffs, we never will under Les. His approach is too negative, we don't turn enough 0-0s at home into wins, and the way he sets teams up is not conducive to grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and getting 3 points.

I could just about bear the odd 3-0 defeat, if I knew we approached most games in a bold manner, going out to win the game and creating chances. However we simply don't. This last month has seen a return to last season. Currently he is playing Akins up front, who has been one of our better attacking players from out wide. He must not trust Muzzy then, as that is the role he was signed for. I knew the lack of strikers would be a problem. We were relying on Enoch to reproduce the form of last season and he simply hasn't.

All the good work at the start will be forgotten soon. We are out of everything, the defence has started leaking, and as ever under Les, we barely get 2 shots on target a game. Another month like this one and we will be dragged into the scrap at the bottom, which should not happen with the squad he has. He better buck his ideas up fast. There needs to be a change of approach, because clearly its not working at the moment.

Very disappointing game. Les did try to improve the forward line with Akins in the middle with Robbo and McGurk on the wings. However as the game progressed it was rather obvious that we were struggling up front (would have liked to see Robbo and McGurk switch wings) for at least 20 mins. In my opinion Robbo is wasted on the left wing he should be in the middle behind the striker. Yes I know that Baxter is already in this position and he nearly scored in the first half with the ball hitting the cross bar but it may be worth a try. Did we miss Weir? not sure really but some of our long range passes were far too easily cut out. Raven and Bucanan both had poor games and Goodie and Ash missed Fon Williams. Welch played well in midfield and Joss appeared to be somewhat quiet (no yellow cards today). Baxter shone on several occasions, but the 'team' will need to work much harder if we are to beat the Dons

we are done for i would say! this loan keeper hardly inspires confidence to the back 4 either! he has a very bad rep! , the first 1/4 of the season has been pure fluke, other teams have our system tactics now. Les publicy says he wont change anything, hardly gives oppostion managers a headache when they know our system even before we kick off. Weve been rubbish for a while now, and it @#$%& me off when we have a fairly decent squad, all the fans can see the system is wrong, we just cant score with a lone striker we simply dont have that type of goal scorer in the squad so the system is flawed ?! why can't Les see that? we need a mininum of 2 or 3 upfront with our current strikers

I think so many of us have been deluding ourselves to think this team could reach the play-offs.
We don't possess the forwards good enough to score many goals. Play 2 forwards up front with our slow defence and we would see more goals scored all-right, but against us.
We will just have to carry on supporting a team whos form and consistency will continue to be up and dowm more than a fiddlers elbow over the rest of the season and then hope that we can obtain the 50 points that should keep us up.

It's not helped either that the referees have been a bit crummy at times and given the team absolutely nothing.

5 points off the playoffs currently is not a terrible position and could be recovered, but ultimately the players need to find a way of converting chances, because they get enough on the money most times, but the money isn't being cashed and it is frustrating when you get 7 or 8 shots on and none hit the net.

I'm suprised the players aren't told to shoot crooked; just aim a yard from where you want the ball to go instead of aiming exactly and they'll score 50% more goals and stop hitting the post and the keeper.

Whilst Fon Williams is having is hand assessed, maybe some of the forward players could have their feet assessed, for minor deviations in any toes and any wonky toes could be corrected to help them get their aim going.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
