Tranmere Rovers v Cheltenham Town Match Discussion

If you can't make Tranmere's game at home to Cheltenham Town on Saturday afternoon, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend......

Article Header - Match Discussion

For those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, particularly the more costly and time consuming southern away games, we at Total Tranmere will be providing a Match Discussion Thread on the Site for every Rovers game.

The thread will allow you to discuss everything from the pre-match build up and starting line-up to the game it as it progresses and the post-match analysis.

Stadium - Tranmere Rovers (Day)

Where possible, Total Tranmere staff will post up the starting line-up and substitutes on the thread as soon as it is made known at the game as well as a half-time report on how the game is going for the benefit of those who are unable to make it.

Tranmere of course host Cheltenham Town on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the FA Cup so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been along to the game.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Admin staff will try and add the team and updates on the game on this thread where possible whilst there will also be our usual update service from our Twitter feed @totaltranmere so if you are not already following us it may be worth doing so!

A draw tomorrow means away trips to Cheltenham and Exeter within four days of each other.

We can blame the referee all we like for today but we simply weren't good enough and Cheltenham looked like the team in the higher division.

Their passing was everything ours wasn't and a lot of our players need to take a good look at themselves after the past few weeks starting with our 'captain' and working down from there.

Not one player looked good enough today and only Andy Robinson looked to have enough quality to do anything.

It's a good job we have started the season well because in the last few weeks we have looked like a team that might end up fighting relegation.

Cheltenham weren't that good, though without a doubt they were better than us.

Neither team created a single goalscoring chance between them imo which is why it's frustrating we lost because of a possibly controversial penalty

Over the years Tranmere built up a reputation of a team with good cup pedigree in front full gates knocking out premiership clubs at home in the early years of the new millennium and getting to the latter stages of the F.A. Cup in that period even before that we had moments of good runs perhaps not reaching the stages we met as I have stated between 1999 -2003.
In those times perhaps we had better teams on the field of play
than we have now and what made these teams was skill pace and passion sometimes when money is not around one has to give up on skills both as a team as a whole but also as individuals in that team but what this team today was all three was lacking.
Their was no passion for the shirt and the whole team lacked ideas we were poor today , Cheltenham had more pace passed it around well and were up for it I know the only goal came from a penalty but if we played on till the cows came home we would have still failed to score so I was very disappointed with today`(Sm77)s effort. We will have to pull the socks up in the league if we are to get a result against Sheff Wednesday next week and if we want to remain in the top nine in the league.
But well done to Cheltenham must have had a game plan and they worked it well! better than our game plan, Les? did we have one(Sm26)

Deja vu from last season.Hoofball at its worst. Why can't they pass the ball to each other. When we had possession everyone ran away from the man with the ball, no one came looking for the easy pass.Cheltenham played some good football at times and thoroughly deserved to win even though it was a dodgy penalty.Total embarassment.

Weisharab stated the game was up for a draw and they would take us back to Cheltenham we could not even get that right(Sm77)

What was controversial about it? If you trip somebody up,it'a foul.

I thought it was a penalty as i thought lucas clipped his heel whether it was intenional or not.

Im afraid that was back to the horrors of the last 2 seasons as we were just totally dire and deservedly lost. Besides robbo there was no creativity in the team at all and it was so easy for them to hold onto the lead.

Welsh weir akins tiryaki & mcgurk of the midfield and forward players were all poor to say the least today.

The season is in danger of falling apart now and we need to get back on track starting next saturday.

Someone I spoke to in the Kop said it looked a clip as well to be fair but I will wait for the highlights before making a proper judgement.

Just looked a bit soft - maybe it was the way he went down!

I said possible controversial because I haven't saw it yet because i had gone the toilet but 6 people i've spoke to said no foul and two said foul. One of those who said no foul was sat in the away end too.

probably our poorest performance to date, against a big tough side we played into their hands.

Usually we do the bullying and work rate on the pitch but they upstaged us today. I thought both teams football was horrific the ball must have been in the air 98% of the time???

Why after pummelling it long for 70 minutes with no joy do we not try something else???? They dropped off making it easy for us to play from the back and into robbo/devaney/weir /akins feet which is where they can do damage?????

Pumping the ball in the air into a scrum of players is exactly what a league 2 team would dream of having to defend.....

Well onto the league and hopefully we do our usual and respond with a performance against sheff wed. We need it...

The manager hasn't mentioned it in his comments on the Official Website. Does that not infer something?

To be fair i thought Cheltenham passed the ball around quite well and didnt hit it in the air that much.

IMO we need to give Labadie a start for Weir or Welsh, captain or not he has been giving the ball away far too much for my liking of late.
Having said that, Cheltenham were excellent today, we came up against a side who have won their last 5 away games, showed no fear, and overall just wanted it more than we did.
I can't imagine the board being too happy with this defeat, as it was our last real chance to make any extra money this season, I now fear that we might be seeing some of our better players moving on in January to balance the books, instead of mounting any real serious challenge for promotion.
Anyway only time will tell.

Penalty or not - the overall performance was back to last seasons dire level. Les had said "It was back to basics" after conceding goals at Chesterfield. The Hoof ball is his basic, and that's what we got yesterday, apart from the last 5 minutes when we tried to play some football. I thought we were outplayed in all areas, and Cheltenham's back 4 had a field day. Every ball to Akins was to his head, and the full back had him in his pocket. I don't think we won one header from the long kicks up field, and yet Fon just kept giving it "Have some". I thought the referee was an absolute joke all throught the match and was very close to losing control. The ball he gave the penalty on was almost out of play and their guy had no chance of catching it. Haven't seen a reply but it looked like he cut across the back of Lucas and fell over.I thought the turning point for me was when Robinson did everything right at the edge of the box, and then didn't even make the keeper make a save. Poor miss, even at our level. I think Robinson has a negative attitude to the other players. There were a number of times he gave a load of lip when he wasn't given the ball exactly where he wanted it, and yet he got caught many times in possession. As to actually rolling up his sleeves and do some closing down- forget that. Finally, I thought our tackling was woeful in the midfield area, We made Cheltenham look much better than they were. I am fearful of next Saturday, but it just depends which team actually turns up for us.

All the hallmarks of the absolute dross of the last 2 seasons is creeping back in. Its getting to the stage again where I am turning up almost certain the game will be poor and we definitely wont't score'

Les needs to get this sorted quickly, another defeat and poor perfromance on saturday and the pressure will start to mount on him.

I don't think the pressure will suddenly be on him more if he loses on Saturday unless the team lost 3-0 or worse.

Tranmere are playing a teasm in 3rd place. If it was a team like Exeter then yes it would look a bit funky if they lost, but losing to Sheffield Wednesday is not a heinous act, unless the margin is huge.

However even losing 1-0 ot them, would not stop some people losing all sense of perspective and declaring Tranmere a backwards no hope team, that was ballsing up a decent season.

Winning the game would be nice though, but a point wouldn't be sniffed at, same as it wasn't against their deadly rivals.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
