Tranmere's youth team coach Kenny Shiels leaves the club

HEADERNEW - breakingnews

Tranmere Rovers' revolving door has continued at full speed today as yet another member of the clubs backroom staff left the club.

Youth team coach Kenny Shiels has followed Wayne Allison out the door today to become the assistant manager at Scottish Premier League side Kilmarknock.

Shiels, former Northern Ireland U-17 manager, joined Tranmere in 2007 as a replacement for Warren Joyce as the head of Tranmere's Centre of Excellence, and has helped oversee players Terry Gornell, Ashton Taylor and Ryan Fraughan make their breakthrough into the clubs first team.

Despite expressing his disappointing in leaving Tranmere, and stressing his love for the club, Shiels told www.tranmererovers.co.uk that this was an opportunity too good to turn down and as such he chose to leave the club.

Tranmere manager Les Parry, who signed a new one-year contract with the club last week, and recently appointed Steve Walker as the new club physio, has indicated that he will hold talks with Peter Johnson soon to discuss the clubs backroom staff.

Our coaching structure is in absolute termoil. At the start of last season, no matter how good they were, we had Barnes, McAteer, Tunks, Garnett and Shiels, plus Warwick Rimmer as a part-time youth coach.

Now all we have left is Les Parry and Garnett, plus Rimmer. We've gone from five full-time staff and one part-time to two full-time and one part-time. If we don't get a few new men in we're really going to struggle.

Don't blame Kenny one bit for going though. Great opportunity for him.

I get the impression everyone is jumping from a sinking ship!

Shirtliff set the tone last season, Shiels doing the same?

I'm fed up with this!

He was offered an assistant Manager's position so is he likely to turn it down?

Chief didn't jump either he was told we couldn't afford him so where the sinking ship comes from I have no idea.

The negative spin from our fans on some issues is unbearable.

Good luck to Kenny in his new job but who knows what may no happen coaching staff wise.

Watch this space!

Don't you think it's a bit pathetic that we couldn't afford to keep the Chief on though?

Maybe bring Chief back and give Garnett a dual role with the 1st team and youth.

It's very strange really and perhaps it's a shame that this didn't happen a week earlier so we could have kept hold of the Chief. We'll just have to see what happens now but what's for sure is we have to appoint some coaching staff and we have to do it fast!

Good luck Kenny, I will miss you!
This appointment looks like a good step for you!
Hopefully we can get another Youth coach just as good as you.
Will watch out for your results and you're lads as well!
See you mate!

How are we meant to sign players though.. they get shown round the club with a youth set-up and first team, and we only have two full-time coaches for what is presumabley 35+ players (if we include the youth team of 15 and we would of course hopefully have about 20 pro's)

We're hardly an attractive club for players who have options are we.

Don't forget that Warwick Rimmer is now part-time and handles Admin rather than coaching.
Too say we are short handed doesn't cover it.
I can only think of Shaun who has the necessary badges to act as a coach. The youth must be training alongside the pros.
What a mess!
What does this say about rag-arsed Rovers.
PJ has a lot to answer for!

the youth are training with the main team at present.

Where did the goalkeeper coach go? hadn't heard he left the club??

Surely a comeback for the chief wouldn't be unrealistic now?

The club has changed a lot in the last few years as we have all noticed and it has changed in line with the whole of football changing, especially in the lower leagues. With this in mind and the volume of staff we have at the moment I think it is a perfect time to take stock and restructure the club, especially on the coaching side.

Although many have seen the club as regressing rather than progressing, I personally think the club and PJ have been one step ahead of the majority of the footballing world and have adjusted the club and its budgets well to try and compete yet live within its means. Aside from the Barnes fiasco which we all know was a huge mistake I think that PJ and the club have been very shrewd and I have every confidence that we will have both adequate coaching and playing staff in place for pre-season and certainly for the season's start.

We can't afford to take risks like most businesses can because in football, as we have seen, that losses and costs can be huge. Tranmere could go out and recruit playing and coaching staff to woo the fans but our over spending could result in starting season 2011/12 playing in the Northern Premier league in tier 8 rather than tier 3 as a result of our over ambition I am sure people would look back and wish we were just making up the numbers in the Npower League rather and living within our means.

I agree with Deadly about your post SWA if it was the truth!
However, when you take your rose tinted glasses off, the reality is- that the board have got no interest in achieving anything but survival as a football club and to asset strip the clubs assets to pay off the debt.
If PJ and the board wanted success, they would have found a buyer or invested in the club, to make sure that the club progressed, rather than regressed!
The clubs infrastructure is embaressing, the youth club next door has better winter training facilities and also spent more money on their two pitches than the club have on the pitch at PP!
PJ took a big risk with JB, If he read the reports on him, he would have found out that he was not the right man! It was all about getting RS armchair supporters to come to PP! It didn't work. PJ didn't know that it wasn't working, two supporters met him and persuaded him!
Finally, we are not living within our means. we have lost an average of around £1million per season since PJ returned from The bluenoses.
Thats great business planning!
The sooner this board is gone from the club (I do keep repeating myself) the better the future will be!

Who is going to buy TRFC? Certainly not someone who is in it for the money or the status symbol. It would have to be a supporter wealthy enough to write off our debt and have enough money to do more than what PJ is doing.

It is all well and good saying that the club loses £1 million p/a but what happens to that debt? It wont just wrack up and be left on some overdraft. It is structured to minimise its impact on the clubs future. That much is obvious. Also, having debt is not a bad thing in business as we all know that debt is cheaper than equity. I am not saying that the club losing money is a deliberate ploy or that it is a good thing for the club but if you know what to do with debt it is not as much of a hindrance as many people think it is.

PJ is not asset stripping the club at all. There has been no evidence of that what so ever. PJ is our biggest creditor I believe (correct me if I am wrong) So if he wanted to reclaim his money owed then he would be well within his rights to sell all of TRFC's assets, take his money and give the club to the fans or something similar but he hasn't done that.

I think that Crystal Palace are a similar club to us. Or at least they could be. There supporter/owner bought the club and loved it and took it on to great things until the club wasn't making enough money and the debts started to mount up at which point he thought enough was enough and the club was in administration. That would be an all too easy option for PJ to take but he hasn't done that.

People have crtisised the man for securing the money he has lent TRFC against assets they own. However, IMO that gives the club even more security. It prevents someone coming in and asset stripping whether that be the authorities, and insolvency company or an investor.

He is not perfect as I said in my first post but he is doing a lot more than just letting the club tick over and putting nothing into the club.

If I'm honest, it is not a bad thing to want nothing but survival at the moment. I think that should be our main priority as a club. How many clubs have ignored their survival for a few days of glory and ended up falling way down the ladder?

I don't think that I have rose-tinted spectacles on. I know that the club is very finely balanced and geared too negatively I know that the club's marketing is shocking, I know that its PR is shocking and sometimes its contract dealings can be poor (but not as poor as some people make out) but my first post was merely responding to points raised which I disagreed with.

Debt is not a bad thing in business, but PJ uses it as a tool, so that he does not have to invest further and starve the club of much needed progress.

If he is not selling the clubs assets, why is he selling Ingleborough? To pay off the debts!
How are the club affording the new training facility? (If we ever see it)
The club will rent it off the council!
Why is the club pursuing the opportunity to mortgage PP?
So that the club will have funds to improve PP!
Once that money has gone and we are still losing money. Then the club will have sold off its assets and then the club would go into administration.
We can't go into administration now because we have assets!

The solution to this is to find a buyer before PJ destroys this club. No-one will buy this club, because the asking price is too high. No-one in his right mind will part with that amount of money(around £10million) for a football club that is losing so much and the infrastructure is so bad.
I have tried to simplify the points.
The simple truth is - that if PJ continues this trend. We will disappear down the ladder of the leagues as we have since PJ came back and eventually go out of existence.
I have studied the financial reports and its bleak to say the least.

IMO PJ uses debt as a tool to secure both his investment and the club's future.

The sale of Ingleborough is something which I would do if I was at the helm. When selling Ingleborough first became a serious consideration the value of it would have cleared PJ's debt and also afforded us a new training facility which would benefit the club and the community.

Remortgaging property again is something which happens all the time in business and will free up cash for the club. We will have to refinance the club's assets constantly for the rest of our existence if we want to remain at this level of football unless some sugar daddy comes in. No one can hold it against PJ that he doesn't want to throw money into the club. If it was any other business and PJ didn't want to run it any more because it was hemorrhaging money he would either refinance and try to make ends meet ot he would strip the assets and close the business if a buyer could not be sought. By selling Ingleborough and writing off debts the club is a more attractive purchase for someone. He is increasing its attractiveness to prospective buyers. Now, if PJ sold off Ingleborough and didn't leave the club with adequate training facilities and left the club in a worse position than it was previously then I would critisise him for that but the way I see it the sale of Ingleborough will be a positive thing.

The club's finances do look bleak and if something isn't done soon the the club's future will look bleak. What do you expect PJ to do though? Sell the club for £1 and write off the the monies owed to him by the club? IMO that would just be asking for anyone to come in and strip the club to its bones, cash in on its assets and leave us up the proverbial creak.

It's all to easy to critisise the way that the club is run off the pitch but I am sure that if we didn't have LR on the board (an appointment of PJ's) then the club would not be doing as well as it is now.

If I'm mistaken about this I apologise, but apparently, LR took over the club when she was involved with PJ (and I don't mean business) She was one of two in the Football League who was payed a salary as a chairman. Why hire Mick Horton if she wouldn't let a Chief Exec run the business side for the board and club. Not even in the premiership does a CE not run a club on day to day issues. He couldn't make a decision without her say-so.
We would have been at least a £1million better off if you take her salary away for the last 11 years!
I've said the turnover of staff is like a revolving door.
We are down to Les, Shaun and the new physio.
The playing squad is so thin, and there are only 15 youth on the books. Usually during the season there are up to 40 players training on any given day.
I know it's early doors, but the quality of our squad leaves a lot to be desired. We are paying the lowest possible wages to these players.
How many times have you seen all the sponsorship packages filled for a game?
This is not because of there is no one who wants to sponsor. It's a case of the price and value. It's also the fact that people won't do business with PJ or LR.
The club shop is a joke. If it wasn't for the fact that the club makes money on the replica shirts. High price, low quality. Once again a change of kit manufacturer again.
Two new kits again. Two last season. at least two the season before. I believed it was against FA rules to fleece the supporters.
The club is slowly dying, no matter what PJ or LR doing.
It is only a matter of time, I pray often that i am wrong, but I fear I am not!

Sorry to dis your dream, but they would be both be wearing RS shirts on.

After attending a reserves game a couple of years ago.
I went into work the next day, chatting to a RS supporter who had attended a euro game at Anfield the previous night.
He told me that he had seen PJ & LR in a box at the same game!
This just shows where their loyalties lie!
It is well known, that PJ was a season ticket holder at Anfield for years!
