Brentford v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

By Total Tranmere
April 19 2010

Throughout the season we provide you with a platform to discuss each and every Rovers match whether it be the build-up to kick-off or post match analysis so here we bring you the Match Discussion Thread for Tuesday evening's Coca-Cola League One match away at Brentford as Tranmere look to move back out of the relegation zone.......

Article Header - Match Discussion

Tuesday 20th April - Coca Cola League One

Brentford v Tranmere R

Kick-Off 7.45pm at Griffin Park

For those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, particularly the high number of costly and time consuming southern away games, we at Total Tranmere will be providing a Match Discussion Thread on the Site for every Rovers game.

The thread will allow you to discuss everything from the pre-match build up and starting line-up to the game it as it progresses and the post-match anaylsis.

Stadium - Brentford

Where possible, Total Tranmere staff will post up the starting line-up and substitutes on the thread as soon as it is made known at the game.

Tranmere of course travel to Brentford in Coca-Cola League One on Tuesday evening in what is another vital game for Rovers, so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on.

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been along to the game.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

So frustrating. Sounds like we were the better team and had loads of chances but finishing just not good enough. I'm absolutely gutted. Keep the faith though. We can still do it.

Dissapointed but not suprised, we just can't win away from home. Looks bleak for us now unless we can get something at Colchester but have to rely on Gills and Exeter getting beat.

I hate having to rely on other people especially when it could have been in our own hands but after the dreadful shows against Wycombe and Hartlepool we lost that advantage.

Thouroughly hacked off!!!

I suppose it's Les' fault we missed all them chances, or their 'keeper made a blinding save last minute, or that their first goal was from a very unlucky deflection...yes it will be because people have it in for him and don't want him to achieve.

As for Barnett, if he was any good and had anything like the right attitude he would have played more than the handful of games he's managed this season

I still don't think we should be having a go at Les for any of the troubles this season. Under Barnes we would have been confirmed down before Stockport were, and we couldn't afford/attract someone with experience. That's not Les' fault.

With our away form the way it is, and the only home game being Millwall, I fear that we might struggle to even get the 3 points that would be enough if Exeter get no more points. It's still not over, but we're going to have to improve, and get a lot more luck than we've been getting. I agree with Mattyj, gutted that we threw it all away against Wycombe and Hartlepool when it was in our own hands.

And on top of that Oldham. Les told them before the game it's not a most win game. When your telling players that they don't have to win instead of telling they have to win it will come back to bite you in the bum............................(Sm26)

That kind of thing goes both ways. It could be seen as him trying to deflect some pressure off the players so perhaps they don't crumble and fall, or it could be seen as you've read it, a strange comment in a dire situation.

I can see a win against Stockport, but not against Colchester and Millwall. Nevertheless it is not the end of the world, and as long as Tranmere can stay in business, the future will always be bright! I would certainly keep the present management team as well.

First chance to post after getting in at 3.30am and then out to work at 8.

First half we played well and I've read elsewhere that it was more a case of good effort and lack of actual ability and in relation to other recent away games I would have agreed with that...

..however last night was different. The players showed the heart and effort required but also played possibly the best I can remember away from home this season (in the first half more so but even in the second in spells).

Once we equalised we began to come back into the game and dominate after a poor start to the second half and I almost think we got carried away looking for that vital winner because their second goal was something of a breakaway.

All does seem bleak after a game I felt we had to win and others reckoned we needed to at least draw but it was good to come away knowing that all of the players had tried their hardest.

If we were a point or two ahead of one of the others (Gillingham/Exeter) with three left I reckon we'll do enough to stay up but I just feel that the fact we are chasing makes it so much harder despite other results - others could lose lots of points but we have to do enough to close the gap.

Will we do it? I'd like to think we still can but where the points will come from I really don't know.

Either way I'll be there next season home and away (bar the opening game as I'm on holiday).

Get to Colchester if you can and get behind them.

Incidentally I just read Les's comments and he summed up the game exactly as I did last night...

"After we scored we went for the winner because draws are no good to us..."

In hindsight perhaps it was the wrong thing to do but the momentum in the game was ours and a goal looked there for the taking.

The best away performance since Charlton and i think we just about deserved to scrape a win although if you dont take your chances, you dont win!
Gulacsi with a few good saves and kicking much improved. Broomes still underrated by most of our fans had a very good game although made a few fouls. Bakayogo good going forward but i felt dodgey with his defending. Two centre backs very good especially Ash and the fellar on the coach said Goodison was at fault for their second goal although it was too far away for me to get a decent view, his phrase was "he turns like the QE2"! Welsh, strong and had a decent game especially in the air Edds quietly did well, Labadie scored a good goal, had a few shots and always looked a threat as well as helping out defensively too, Bas better than he has been since his comeback although i often feel that he doesn't know where he is going with the ball, Moore again playing well but unfortunately nothing fell to him in the box, Curran ran his socks off as usual and his efforts helped get a few balls in. Nice to finally see Andy Robinson and he put in a couple of crosses and won us a corner with his 15 minute appearance.
Also the fans deserve a well done, got behind the team and made some noise, a bit gutting, now we have to get something from saturday.

No we won't, we'll be five behind Exeter with two left. Maths isn't my strong point but that equates to us needing to win two and Exeter losing two to stay up. That is possible.

Anyway, on the flip side of your poor maths, if we win our next two and Exeter lose their next two we're safe.

Well I'm not being paid like Les. This is a man who continues to play non performers, continues to play the same system, keeps his favourites in the side whatever happens. If I missed glaring chances like Curran, continued to have no effect on a game like McClaren and be utterly useless like Gornell, I would expect to be dropped. Those on the bench should be given a chance and the talentless put on the bench. But we will never know will we because things won't change? You Cadbury seem to have a strange view of the game, a nonsensical view.
I will support them evermore, as the song goes but when glaring managerial errors are continued to be done I will criticise (and I'm not the only one who thinks like this).
Les should give up and go back to the old job, there are two others there.

Curran, McLaren and Gornell have been scapegoats this season for so many people, eg the above post, as has broomes. People on here that watch reserves regularly tend to think mahon shuker barnett etc are no better.

Burrows
Mikey
21/04/2010 19:25
Curran has been one of our better players this season. Gornell is suffering from confidence - probably not helped by everyone slating him at such a young age, remember he's a young lad compared to the likes of McLaren and Broomes..

McLaren had a good spell for about 4/5 games recently but was anonymous vs Exeter.

Broomes has been all round terrible until recently when he's been at right back.

well personally i disagree with that, i think McLaren has been a key player since the turn of the year although his set pieces on the whole have been poor. While Broomes has been o.k throughout the season but i think he is a bit last ditch with everything he does. They both have bad games, thats why they're league 1 football players, they're inconsistent.
All in my opinion of course.

agree with the above and ozric In response to your comments of me I don't think I have ever come across a more clueless and idiotic set of comments as yours! Well done!

All the players you have mentioned have looked good in games recently (have you attended them all???) Les has as good a record as any manager we could have attracted and probably better, we have 2 good coaches in chief and shaun who also play a large part in the team.

I cannot argue that in terms of shots corners and yes possession we had the better of the game but despite that the Brentford attack looked sharper. In the second half too many balls where just hit aimlessly upfield only to give possession to Brentford. There was plenty of effort in evidence but far less in terms of class. When Robinson came on there was more guile shown but I honestly belief that LP just does not trust flair players.I thought the Brentford full backs looked vulnerable and it was crying out for agenuine winger to exploit the situation but Shuker was not even on the bench.
And yes by some measures Broome looked o.k but most of the danger came from their left flank and both goals exposed naive defending. I really do think that when savage is in the team it changes our game for the worse.Again by his own standards he did not have a bad game but he is not a striker and when you watch carefully little comes from his flick on or lay offs .He lacks the skills and even the physical imposition to play the kind of holding game that someone like Allison could undertake. I prefer the youngsters for all their limitations.
It was a game that could have been won but it was flaws and not bad luck that meant we came away with nothing and it reflected apattern that has been seen since the first away game this year when at Yeovil we had more of the game.

Until we cannot make it I will continue to hope but for weeks now it has been that rather any rational reasons. Our weaknessess mmean that we are capable of lossing to anyone and that is why we are the only team in the division that has not been able to win 2 games in succession.

As for Parry I love the guy but as a manager he is as limited as the squad

I agree with Devon Exile. Get it in the box and hope is what is going on.
PLayers are supposed to work together, and certainly strikers should be setting eachother up...with assistance from elsewhere.
Les Parry likes Curran for his workrate, but for Les it's been defend from the front
Now what about The Chief ? Hasn't he any ideas ?
Do you see strikers in conversation as they come out ?

in an ideal world we would play like barcelona but without beckfords/lamberts in your team you have to play that sort of football.

Incidentally stoke have done well 'getting it in the box' and I remember leeds/southampton both lumping it upto the strikers when we played them???

Burrows

22/04/2010 21:03
Every successful team defends from the front two. Defence starts from pressure from your strikers.

Rubbish teams let the opposition get the ball to their wingers/strikers before they put any real pressure on them, a bit like us in August.

agree with last comment barcelona are great at pressing with 2 men the moment an oppostion player gets the ball, this is something we have massively improved on since les took charge.
