In this morning's press conference at Prenton Park, returning midfielder Alan Mahon expressed his delight at returning to the Club where he began his career before moving on to pastures new in 2000.

New midfield signing Alan Mahon this morning expressed his delight at returning to Tranmere Rovers on something of a surprising three-year deal, becoming new Manager John Barnes's first new signing as Rovers Boss.

Mahon, who re-signed for the Club yesterday began his career at Rovers and was part of the side that reached the final of the League Cup in 2000 at Wembley before Mahon moved on to Sporting Lisbon and then returning to Blackburn Rovers, Wigan and latterly Burnley.

Speaking at this mornings Press Conference, Mahon said....

"It's always been home to me and I've always lived on Wirral. The opportunity to come back was beautiful...brilliant...I'm looking forward to the challenge.  I never thought I'd get the opportunity to come back, which I'd always hoped for."

"Tranmere has always been a family club, a lot of the people who were here when I started my career are still here.  People like Les Parry and Shaun Garnett, and you still see Nicko around from time to time."

"Football changes, but hopefully with what the Gaffer and Chairman have in store we can bring the Club back to where it was and push on from there."

"The Gaffer wants to play football. We're looking to enjoy the game, enjoy football and get results.  Don't be afraid of the opposition and just play."

"The older you get the more experienced you get.  It's about making sure the young lads are ticking over and everyone is positive.  Young lads just need to be pushed in the right direction and that's what I hope to do. I watched the young lads train yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised."

Interesting comment from Mahon there. I wonder what he's referring to?

I am hopefuly/fairly confident we're gunna get a decent run out of Trigger and Digger, they live locally so I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be making nothing but a strong effort - bringing the likes of Mahon and offering a trial to a few players is inspiring to say the least.

My only worry is the empty goal net behind our defenders at the moment, but I'm sure they have a trick up their sleeve to fill that gap. Watch this space!

I'm with SWS... it's just the average comment every player makes when they join a new club, how many people say "We'll be lucky to stay in this division." With Alan having been here during our Championship years, he's bound to say he's looking to "push on" and return there! Just like RM did when he was appointed manager.

Yeah ok, point taken about mahons statement but to get him to sign, surely barnes has had to sit him down and spell out his future plans???? He can hardly get him to the club on a promise of being surrounded by reserves and a relegation battle! Still confident!!!!!!
