Kay Signs for League One Rivals Huddersfield Town

By Deadly Submarine
May 29 2009

With the season over and the pre-season games already in the planning, the transfer activity has already begun with news that Rovers’ captain Antony Kay has signed for Tranmere’s League One rivals Antony Huddersfield Town.

Article Header - Breaking News 2

After much recent speculation, Rovers captain Antony Kay was today confirmed  as a Huddersfield Town player for next season, joining the Terriers on a two year deal and in doing so securing a return to his native Yorkshire after originally signing for Rovers from Barnsley in June 2007.

After initially signing as a defender for his first season at the Club, the departure of Paul McLaren at the end of last season saw the Rovers skipper pushed into a more forward role in central midfield for the season just ended - a move which paid off for Manager Ronnie Moore as Kay netted twelve goals from that position and ended the season as Rovers' top-scorer having previously scored seven goals last season.

Kay

Kay has Returned to his Native Yorkshire

Speaking today the Huddersfield Town Official Website, Kay said....

"The first I heard about a possible move came after Tranmere played Huddersfield at Prenton Park.  We won 3-1 and I scored two goals that day and the day after Robbie Williams called me and explained that the manager had been asking about me. I called my agent and told him to get on with it to see what would come from it."

"Lee Clark, phoned me up and everything was positive.  We met up and it has all followed on from there."

"He didn't really need to sell the Club to me but when I met up with Lee and Dean you could see the desire they both have.  They have a really firm idea of where they want to go - they want to take the Club places and as a player that is what you want to hear.  I want to be a part of a team that achieves those goals."

"Every time I have played Huddersfield Town I have been impressed with their team; they have good players and they have been unlucky over the years.  When you add the new players the manager is looking to bring in to the current squad, I think we have a really good chance of promotion next season."

"I think I would now class myself as a midfielder, but the manager knows that I can play at centre-half if he needs me to.  There is quite a bit of competition for the midfield positions here but that can only be a good thing as you cannot slack off for a minute in training or you will lose your place."

"Obviously I know Robbie Williams from Barnsley and we still keep in touch but I know a lot of the players here from matches against them, such as the Clarke brothers.

"When you join a new Club, you cannot wait to get started and I am counting down the days until pre-season training starts.  We've got things sorted pretty early, so now I just have to prepare. I want to start now, but I'll have to play the waiting game for around four weeks!"

Whilst many Rovers fans will see Steve Jennings as the most important player to keep during the summer transfer madness, the loss of Kay and most importantly his goals will be a big blow ahead of next season unless Ronnie Moore can once again work wonders in the transfer market on a limited budget.

Kay is the second high profile departure from the Club after striker Chris Greenacre was confirmed to be leaving just prior to the end of the season for a new life with Australian A-League side Wellington Phoenix who are based in New Zealand.

As well as the pair, Eddy Sonko, Adnan Ahmed, Danny Holmes and Luke Waterfall have also been released by the Club.

Rumours have circulated before about the circumstances of Kay's departure, particularly to another League One side and indeed Total Tranmere was told about Kay's move to the Galpharm just three days after the season ended at Scunthorpe.

We would like to wish Kay all the best for his future career back in Yorkshire and now look forward to news of his replacement arriving at Prenton Park soon!

Well we all knew it was happening but Kay has joined Huddersfield and it has been announced on their website. I am very annoyed at his comments though, stating he told his agent to speak to Lee Clark after we beat them 3-1! This happens but it shows a bit of disrespect to our fans to say that publicly. It might explain why he was rubbish for the last few games as well.

Well if Huddersfield want to pay his big wage demands then good luck to him I say.

We can replace him for sure so not the end of the world!

Also goes to prove that my source was right all along despite people refusing to beleive it was a done deal! However this does worry me as the same source also said something else which I pray is not true!

kay looked like he was going ages ago from what he says and this is the reason why he played so s.hit in the last couple of games, to prevent injury to himself instead of gettin us in the play offs so F.U.C.K OFF KAY

Total Tranmere was aware of this way before 3 days after the Scunthorpe game, I'd heard about this months ago and posted it on here! winking smiley

Anyway, gutted he's gone and to see him in a HTFC shirt is horrible but it was inevitable. Can't believe he was talking to the HTFC manager in March, a bit disrespectful of our club really. Granted he's been a good servant to the club but when he left Barnsley he had personal problems from what I gather and there weren't many clubs willing to take the gamble on him when we did. I have faith that Ronnie can find other players who maybe haven't settled elsewhere and get the best out of them. Shame as it is, I'm sure he'll be replaced with someone as good, I don't think we were fantastic in midfield last season and if I'm being critical, if we were to replace one of the midfielders, I would rather it be Kay than Jenno. I know he scored crucial goals for us but I don't think we created much from midfield, Kay's performances also dipped massively towards the end of the season, it was inevitable really! Anyway, if this isn't warning that we should offer contracts a full year before the contract expires I don't know what is, the player then has 6 months before they can even talk to other clubs so there are no distractions.

"We want to be in the position of having players who can come into the team in case of injury or suspension and not weaken the team."

WTF???? OK. I can accept that if Huddersfield are offering him more money to be a similar figure at their club to the one he was at ours, that he would choose to leave. But why would Kay want to leave us to be a fringe player elsewhere? To me that just proves his greed.

The other news on the other hand, is worrying, incredibly worrying. For once sub, i hope your source is not as reliable as it appears.

To say that he was looking for a move means that his heart wasn't in Tranmere,i would rather have someone who wants to put on the shirt if he wanted to go then he should have been upfront about it,can't see him getting a good reception at PP next season after those comments,GOOD RIDDANCE

If he was moving to better himself as a footballer he would of joined a Championship club - staying in L1 alone show's his greed.

Footballers move all the time to different town it's part of there job. It's not like the Wirral has nothink to offer. It has many great areas that are very nice to live with very good schools. As said before he was drinking all the time and was fat at his club before us they got rid of him for that. Tranmere gave him a chance to play football again. I think he has done wrong to all the fans at Tranmere who looked at him as a hero. He was offered very good money to stay so i say greed @#$%& Kay (Sm113)

As I said to some of the lads earlier on at the TT game, it wasn't just what he said but also what he didn't say.

Nothing about his time at Tranmere or the opportunity given to him by the Club or any thanks to the fans for their support and awards they voted him for too.

Moving on I understand and even moving for the money I can understand but the whole thing stinks of ungratefulness.

I know your always gonna want to earn the most you want but he's 26, possibly peaking as a footballer, so it's a bit of a "greedy" decision he chose the money over playing at a higher level.

tbh with you, huddersfield aer a club on the way up.

Rich Chairman who is willing to invest in good new players

Big stadium

Decent Attendances

I do not blame him one bit for mmovin to huddersfield, in 5 years time they will be doing better than both us and peterboerough guaranteed!

Peterborough have...

A richer chairman,
A 25, 000 all seater stadium which will be built in 2/3 years.
And they have good attendances because they are a well supported club, not because they did £100 season tickets like Hudders.

You can argue for both sides Dani!

Huddersfield have apparently been a club 'on the up' since they were a club 'on the down' when they came down. Didn't they come down the same time as us, have they been up since? Have they finished above us since? Can't recall either but I would say even with bigger attendances, better players, more money etc, they'll still be in this league in years to come. I agree with Matt when he says Kay thinks he's better than he is, this isn't sour grapes that he's gone, I am gutted but I'm sure we can find a better player than him. Apart from his goals what did he actually offer? He couldn't pass, didn't often break up the play, didn't create chances and wasn't that much of a captain. I think Chorley led the team well as did Goodison, you hardly ever heard Kay shouting anything. Also agree with Sub in that the manner of his exit is disgraceful, no thanks to anyone from Tranmere, the club, his fellow players, the fans who paid his wages for the past 2 years, sorry to see him go but I would rather pay my wages towards players who want to play for the club to be honest.

Apart from his ability in the box, i dont think we're gunna miss him that much. If we could get hold of a clinical striker to score goals, we could easily find a better midfielder

i gotta say, i know everyone feels a little burnt by kays decision to leave. But i find it funny how he's gone from hero to zero. Everyone wanted him to sign a month ago now he's gone we he was rubbish anyway lol...

I'l admit like Mathew that Kay is replacable if we work hard enough and are clever enough in the tranfer market. But Kay had an awesome finish on him, was a massive threat on corners and yes while he gave the ball away occasionally thats because he was trying to find that killer ball. Jenno didn't do that because that wasn't his job. He wins the ball and gives it to kay to try an find that ball. It is time to move on and i am extremely unhappy with Kay however im not gonna forget the past 12 months and like it or not we wouldn't have been in the top 10 with out him probably.

always dissapointing to lose a player like kay esp on a free,

but with the likes of jennings coyne chorley our ian all out of contract something needs to be done to ensure they stay with us, cos all are capable of playing for another league 1 club,

i have never rated ronnie moore but i now believe he is the man for the job now, we have no money and moore is a good no money manager,

i think in 08/09 we over acheived slightly given our financial position compared to others, the hard part now will be to try and persuade the right kind of player to come here to improve on that

I am really annoyed with Kay leaving, especially what he has said about Huddersfield. How can he say all those things when they were one of the worst sides I saw last season.

The one thing that really annoys me and it goes for him and anyone else who moves to another league One club, how can they justify it when we finished 7th in the league. We had a great team last season and keeping that squad and adding to it would have definitely meant we would be favourites to at least get that play off postion next season.

If Kay has gone because of his family then fair enough but I just think he is using that as an excuse to justify getting more money. I think he also forgets that he was out on his @#$%& at Barnsley after being caught on the lash before a match when we picked him up.

Although this is the way football is, it still annoys me and hurts especially when he goes to a team who finished well below us.
