As Total Tranmere reported earlier in the week, Tranmere Rovers have today signed former Walsall winger Edrissa Sonko on a one year deal. A Gambian international, Sonko joins on a free-transfer after the Saddlers released him at the end of the season.

Sonko Makes It Two In for Ronnie!

Tranmere Rovers have today completed the signing of Gambian international Edrissa Sonko on a one-year contract after the player had a successful trial period at the club.

The 28-year old started his career in his home country with Real de Banjul, before moving to Belgium with Anderlecht in 1999.

Six appearances and one goal came for the Belgium giants before a move to Roda in Holland where his career really kicked off, as he became a firm fan favourite in the process of making 112 appearances and scoring 20 goals over seven years with the club.

In 2007, he spent time at Xanthi before moving to England with Walsall where he spent one season, scoring five times in 37 goals, including one deflected goal against Tranmere at the Bescot Stadium in April.

During January of the 07/08 season, Sonko won the League One player of the month award, although consistency was not part of his game according to many fans.

The Saddlers released Sonko at the end of the 2007/08 season from where he joins Tranmere on a one-year deal. He can play on either wing and has scored seven goals in fourteen international appearances for his country.

Sonko is an exciting addition to the Tranmere squad, and he certainly put in an impressive appearance against Ronnie Moore's side for Walsall at the Bescott Stadium in April.

The midfielder is Tranmere's second signing of the summer after Gareth Edds joined from MK Dons a few weeks ago.

An exciting signing I think, he played really well against us at the Bescott in April and Youtube videos show he has talent. Very pleased!

Yeah Im pleased with this to be fair, although Im always a bit worried why he has been released by someone like Walsall but that could be for any number of reasons I suppose. He looks promising.

It may not be the best signing, but put it this way - its a replacement for Davies and still another player on the other hand.

One Year Contract sound a bit iffy though because we will probably be back in this situation this tym next july.

What is wrong with a one-year deal. We've brought a player in, which is the main thing, but a one year deal also gives us the chance to assess him and his ability. If he's not good enough, we can release him for free after a year, if we rate him we can attempt to retain him. It's better than having somebody useless on the books for two-years

Mixed reviews on him from Walsall fans, seems to flit in and out of games, has talent but doesen't show it often enough. Hopefully we don't sign that Dobson, apprantley he is shocking. To be honest Im still hoping for better signings to come but we could have done worse! Also as has been said its only a one year deal.

Dobson is meant to a great Player from what I have heard.

Guess it just depends who you talk to. Same as Rovers Fans giving their views on Zola I suppose to Crewe Fans - mixed opinions.
