A brace of goals for both Gareth Taylor and Chris Greenacre saw Rovers safely through to the second round of the FA Cup in a game in which they always looked comfortable despite a ten minute blip in the second half that saw the visitors score with their only two real chances at goal.

The goals caused a little more tension amongst the home fans after Gareth Taylor (2) and Chris Greenacre had put Rovers 3-0 to the good but the tension was eased again when Greenacre completed his brace to make it 4-2.

Ronnie Moore made just one change to the side that beat Millwall 3-1 in League One last Friday night with the suspended Chris Shuker replaced by Jason McAteer, meaning John Mullin moved to the right hand side of midfield.

Joining John Achterberg, Danny Harrison and Carl Tremarco on the bench were youngsters Mike Jones and striker Craig Curran.

The visitors started brightly with a couple of corners and a chance early on for Karl Murray that ended up on the top of Gavin Ward’s netting.

However Rovers had their fair share of good moments at the other end with Chris Greenacre’s cross just being missed by Davies and Taylor due to slightly too much pace and Mullin’s whipped cross from the right was then headed over by Steve Davies.

On 19 minutes, three sides of Prenton Park were appealing for a penalty to the home side when the ball quite clearly struck the hand of a Woking defender but the referee refused to give the award.

However from the attack that resulted in the handball, Rovers won a corner and it was from it that the home side took the lead.  Paul McLaren’s superb delivery was headed home by Gareth Taylor from around 12 yards out to the delight of the home fans.

The goal seemed only to encourage the Rovers players on and Taylor could have had a hat-trick within ten minutes of his first goal as he first misdirected a header away from goal after an excellent floated cross from Steve Davies and shortly after, his shot from a Mullin cross was deflected over.

With Steve Davies the star man for the home side, it was no surprise when Rovers doubled their lead from the youngsters cross as he supplied the perfect ball to Chris Greenacre who finished expertly in to the top of the net.

Whatever plan Woking may have cooked up at half-time must have gone out of the window as early as the second minute of the second half when a spell of early Rovers pressure that saw a Chris Greenacre shot well saved, eventually resulted in the third goal.

John Mullin crossed from the right hand side of the area and Gareth Taylor again stooped to conquer to add his second of the game and Rovers third.

Rovers appeared to step of the gas after the third goal and this allowed Woking back into the game.  The visiting fans were eventually given something to cheer when Gavin Ward’s mistake saw Simon Jackson’s cross sneak in between his legs for what should have been a consolation.

The goal re-vitalised the visitors though and they added a second goal just six minutes later with Craig McAllister’s excellent low finish past Ward.

There should perhaps have been some worry for the Rovers fans at this stage but the team had always looked fairly comfortable and when the players stabilised the game and with 15 minutes remaining, Mike Jones replaced Paul McLaren for his second senior Rovers appearance, with John Mullin moving back into his more natural central midfield role.

Three minutes after the substitution, Rovers made the game safe as Chris Greenacre, refusing to be outscored by strike partner Gareth Taylor added his second of the game and Rovers fourth with an sweeping volley from a header by Shane Sherriff following Davies’s corner.

El-Salahi forced Ward into a late save and Taylor’s powerful shot from distance went straight into the hands of keeper Jalal and was virtually the last kick of the game.

Rovers deserved the win, whilst Woking performed well at times themselves.  In spite of this and the mid half goal spree from the visitors, Rovers were always comfortable and progress to the second round, the draw for which takes place tomorrow at around 3.00pm live on BBC1.
