All the pre-match team news and statistics ahead of Rovers’ home FA Cup First Round tie against non-league side Woking on Saturday. After a recent run of poor form in Cup competitions, Rovers will be looking to progress to the second round for the first time in three years.

FA Cup First Round at Prenton Park

 

 

Tranmere go into the first round of the FA Cup this Saturday in the hope that it will be third time lucky for them having failed to get past the first round for the past two seasons.

 

Last season, after taking an early lead through Chris Greenacre, Rovers eventually lost 2-1 to Bradford City at Valley Parade and a year earlier, a single goal from Peterborough at London Road was enough to Rovers exit the competition earlier than planned.

 

This season has paired Rovers with Nationwide Conference side Woking who currently sit in 12^th place in the League but the game should not be seen as being any easier than the Bradford and Peterborough ties of recent years.

 

As the perpetrators of many a cup upset themselves against higher placed teams, Rovers know only too well that to underestimate any opponent can often be fatal and this game is no exception.

 

The two sides have never met before and the side from Surrey set up the tie with Rovers by beating Potter’s Bar 3-2 at home in the final qualifying round.

 

Whichever side progresses to the second round will learn who their next opponents will be when the second round draw takes place on Sunday afternoon, live on BBC1.

Rovers will be without Chris Shuker who serves a one-match suspension for five yellow cards so far this season.

 

In addition to Shuker’s absence, fellow winger Kevin Ellison (ankle), Robbie Stockdale, Calvin Zola (foot) and Steven Jennings (knee) are all unavailable as is youngster Ollie James (foot) although on loan right-back John Thompson has been given permission to play by Nottingham Forest.

 

Woking:

 

Woking are likely to be without winger Goma Lambu (knee) and Ian Selley (Achilles) but defender Gary McDonald (hamstring) is hoping to return to fitness in time to play.
