Tranmere’s reserve side were beaten 7-0 by Blackburn Rovers reserves tonight in the Pontin’s League Cup competition at Morecambe's Christie Park ground.

Danny Harrison was sent off in the 66th minute for violent conduct and somewhat worryingly, Jason McAteer played for 85 minutes of the game before being substituted.

John Achterberg did not start in goal with Peter Kennedy instead being the unfortunate player between the posts.

Blackburn took the lead after just three minutes from a free kick move that ended with Matt Derbyshire, on loan at Wrexham last season, opening the scoring.

On the half hour mark, Derbyshire was denied a second goal by a linesman’s flag but Blackburn were soon ahead by two goals when a corner kick went right through the Rovers penalty area for Eddie Nolan to tap in.

After Jason Brown in the Blackburn goal had been tested by Mike Jones, his opposite number for Tranmere, Peter Kennedy cleared a kick straight to Garner of Blackburn who rounded the keeper to make it 3-0.

The first half scoring wasn’t over yet though as Garner added his second of the night, heading in from a corner to make it 4-0 at half-time.

On the hour it was 5-0 as Derbyshire added his second of the night shortly before then being involved in an incident that saw Danny Harrison sent off for Tranmere.

Garner grabbed his hat-trick on 74 minutes from the penalty spot after being fouled by Henry and four minutes later, Tranmere’s misery was complete as Derbyshire grabbed his hat-trick to make the final score 7-0.
