Rovers pay the Penalty as Darlo go through

By MikeyB
November 1 2006

A Penalty converted by Gaetano Giallanza was enough for Darlington to grab a 1-0 over Rovers. It was Dave Penny’s first game in charge and they deserved to win. Rovers never really looked like scoring as they picked up more injuries, exactly what we didn’t need!

Gaffers Verdict

"I'm just glad it wasn't a league game. They're horrible nights when there windy, but thats when you role your sleeves up. You might not be able to play your football, but you can scrap. Punters have paid there money to watch us and want us to go all the way. The least they deserve is a bit of sweet, blood and tears. Hopefully that will be back against Milwall and we can get back to winning ways. It will be an awful lot better, take that from me.

We're not ruthless enough. We don't get enough second balls and that worries me a little bit. We didn't get the tempo of the game, and I think one or two of them thought 'oh its only Darlington and its going to be easy'. It doesn't matter who you play, we're not good enough to switch off.

It didn't help with the injuries as i was trying to give one or two lads a rest, but we still had enough on the park and we didn't do it. We couldn't score and the referee gave them a goal. If there was going to be a penalty decision then it should of been for Davo. He stayed on his feet when he could of gone down. Whats wrong with him having a shot and then, if theres no benefit to us, a penalty? We're telling people not too dive bu sometimes we wonder if it is best to dive. If you get a touch in the box, go down.

It's easy to blame the referee, But I'd get into trouble if I said what I wanted too. Its a big disapointment for me. We've thrown it away by not being ruthless enough with a helping hand from three officials.

Jenno has tweaked his knee and Kevin had a recurrance of the injury he got last week. We'll have to wait and see how they are."
