In what has become possibly THE most longest and most boring transfer saga in the history of Professional Football, Michael Essien FINALLY completed his transfer from Lyon to Chelsea today. YAWN!

Michael Essien was born in December 1982 and hails from Ghana. His career started playing for a Ghanian club called Liberty Professionals and in 1999 he attracted lots of attention whilst playing in a U-17 World Cup tournament in New Zealand.

Bastia, from Corsica signed Essien in 1999 and he played in various positions (right-back, left-back and central defence) although not very regularly until 2001 when he was asked to play in a more central midfield due to an injury to a team mate.

In 2001 he represented Ghana in the World Youth Tournament in Argentina and although he was one the youngest players in the tournament he excelled and then the following year he made his full International debut for Ghana in the 2002 African Nations Cup.

In season 2002/2003 Essien scored six goals for Bastia and helped Bastia to qualify for the UEFA. Lots of clubs throughout Europe were interested in Essien, including at one stage both Merseyside giants Everton and Liverpool.

Eventually Essien moved to Lyon, even though Bastia accepted an offer from Paris St.Germain, and in his time at Lyon he helped Lyon to win their 3rd consectutive French title and was prominent in Lyon's Champions League campaign last season.
