The media are reporting that we “have reached an agreement for the signing of striker Romelu Lukaku”.  Belgian club Anderlecht reluctantly let go of their star player although admitted that it was a “win-win” situation for both clubs.  We reportedly had an £18m bid for the player turned down last month so we can assume the bid or add-ons were increased during the last few days.

Chelsea released a statement which read: “An agreement has been reached with Anderlecht for the transfer to Chelsea of striker Romelu Lukaku.”

“The move is now subject to the player passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.”

The 18-year-old appears to possess all the strength and prowess of the truly phenomenal Drogba, although from what I have seen of the youngster (admittedly not reels and reels of footage) it remains to be seen if he will develop the finesse and technique of our current black panther. 

“Luka” Lukaku was apparently also an Arsenal target, but our persistence coupled with the youngsters well documented enthusiasm for our club (this appears to have been initiated by connections with Malouda) seems to have put paid to the competition for his signature. 

Luka was top scorer in the Belgian league at just 16 and netted 16 goals in 37 league appearances last season - he has already notched two in the current campaign of the Belgian league.

A statement on Anderlecht's official website www.rsca.be read: "RSC Anderlecht and Chelsea have reached an agreement regarding the transfer of Romelu Lukaku.

“Subject to the results of medical tests and the conclusion of negotiations between the player and the English club, Romelu Lukaku will therefore move into the colours of the London club.”

“We regret the departure of Romelu...but the agreement is a win-win situation for the player and RSC Anderlecht. The club's management is committed to finding a good replacement in the short term.  We wish him every success for the rest of his career,” Anderlecht general manager Herman van Holsbeeck said.

Andre Villas-Boas has been constantly questioned about our long pursuit of Luka.  He said: “He is a very interesting young prospect and the situation is now that we have to position ourselves to maybe get this kind of talent.  So I would say that anything can happen.”

It remains to be seen if he actually integrates into the first team squad this season – or goes back out on loan.  If he does stay in London then the departure of one, or possibly two of our current strike-force must be inevitable....surely?

Thought it was about time I did something!

And yes, good luck to Yuri....shame in a way as I feel we never saw the best of him.
