Reports are coming in that Chelsea are enquiring after Aston Villa´s Ashley Young. It is claimed by the media that Young is one of Guus Hiddinks recommended players to sign.
Whilst Young has just received the Young Player of the Year award from the PFA and does fit the profile of one group of players we need to sign (young and English), I have my doubts that this story could be true (which probably means he’ll be pictured in the press holding up a Chelsea shirt soon!).
For one thing O’Neil would be loathe to lose the player and presumably Randy Learner has enough cash to hold onto their most coveted players. Secondly, with the presumably imminent arrival of Zhirkov, Malouda now in excellent form and even the possibility of a bid for Ribery this summer, at most we could be playing the percentages by enquiring for Young “just in case”.
Of course, if Malouda was to be sold and any bid for Ribery is unsuccessful, then the Young rumours take on a different complexion.
In any case, for Young to come to Stamford Bridge, the player himself would need to insist on leaving as he wants to play Champions League football for example.
Time will tell.
