COME ON CHELSEA

What is it with Chelsea drawing teams at home in domestic cup competitions that play in Blue and White as their first choice colours? In recent years we have drawn Colchester Utd, QPR, Everton, Leicester City, Huddersfield Town, Gillingham, Macclesfield Town and more recently Southend United.

What makes it so frustrating is that the fans of these clubs take over The Shed, when The Shed should be Chelsea's!

Tomorrow, Chelsea welcome the 'Tractor Boys' from Ipswich Town in the 4th Round of the FA Cup and as Ipswich's 1st colours are Blue and White, yet another 6,000 fans in Blue and White will occupy OUR Shed to roar their team on.

The last time Chelsea and Ipswich met competitively was in the Premiership back in 2001 when Claudio Ranieri was our manager. Chelsea won 2-1.

The most 'famous' statistic between the two clubs is that Chelsea won their last competitive penalty shoot-out.

The penalty shoot-out win came 11 years, 1 month and 16 days ago. The win was at Portman Road in the League Cup.

After the game ended in a 2-2 draw, Chelsea won the shoot-out  4-1.

Going back even further in time to Monday 27th December 1971 to be precise, Chelsea played Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge in the 'old' First Division and I remember this game for two reasons.

First - Centre-half David Webb had to play in goal, because Peter Bonetti and John Philips were both injured and Steve Sherwood who wasn't in the squad, was unable to get to Stamford Bridge in time.

Second - The first Chelsea 'goal' was awarded despite the fact that the ball entered the goal, via the side netting.

Chris Garland and Steve Kember were Chelsea's scorers that day.

Back to the present day. Mikel is suspended for picking up five yellow cards. John Terry is ruled out of the game due to back spasms and Ray Wilkins says that JT returns to training on Sunday.

Is it a co-incidence that JT is on Four yellow cards and one tomorrow if he was playing would rule him out of the trip to Anfield next Sunday?

Jose Bosingwa is also on Four yellow cards.

Didier Drogba, subject to much media speculation this week, is in the squad. Whether he plays remains to be seen now that Money Citeh are prepared to offer 'The Drog,' £180,000 per week to play for them.

Head spinning money!!

After his immediate impact against Stoke City last week I would like to see Miroslav Stoch given a start. What's the worst that can happen? If it doesn't work, Phil can change it.

Miroslav is a pacy winger, plays out wide and stays out wide as he proved last week. His cross eventually found its way for Super Frank to score that dramatic winner. With Di Santo heading down for Juliano Belletti to equalise, those last minutes were the most dramatic seen at Stamford Bridge for many a year.

I would also like to see Franco given a start. All the boy needs is a goal and he should start flying. He was so desperately unlucky not to have scored against Southend United in the 3rd Round.

So with no Mikel does Scolari play a holding midfielder using Belletti or will we be more attacking? 4-4-2 with Drogba and Anelka? Probably not - although that would give the possibility of Di Santo having some time.

I´ve no problem with Terry being out for this one seein as we have Alex and Ivanovic as back up - maybe Mancienne may get some time?

Agree re Stoch. After his brief but effective spell against Stoke he deserves a decent run out.

Ipswich are traditionally a side that likes to play football - a good passing side. I can´t imagine them trying to park the bus but we´ll see.

Re stats etc:

So that´s 10 years since we last won a competitive shoot-out?!

So Kember scored a "goal" through the side netting. Alan Hudson scored one as well but I can´t remember who against?

I mentioned the other day that I had seen Chelsea change their kit to red when playing at home (and I thought it was Ipswich) but most seem to refer to the match in the FA Cup against Ipswich in the early 70´s when FA Cup rules stated that both had to play in away colours.

Now, I wasn´t at that one BUT I was in the Shed for the match in the late 70´s when Chelsea had to play in red at home - and I´m SURE it was because the other team had forgotten their kit (or only bought their home kit). I definitely remember it - I distinctly remember Ossie running out in red but nobody seems to recall it. I´m not going senile....somebody please help!

2 things for me here boss,

1, nail on the head well done,

2, Why should chelsea giveup there home kit, what if it goes replay, do ipswich play in there away kit at home,,
very strange and agree 100% with you on this.
