This was a game which Hull fans will rightly feel they deserved to win, but really they can only have themselves to blame for failing to convert their chances as they fell to Ade Akinbiyi's ninth goal of the season and an inform Brian Jensen in goal.

The Overview

First Half

The game started with Hull doing the pressing. Their first chance came in the first few minutes when Brian Jensen got a hand to Ryan France's header to turn it away for a corner. Hull continued to do the pressing until the 28th minute with only a 25 yard effort from Garreth O'Connor which went wide the only real effort from Burnley, then following a Hull attack the ball was worked downfield and crossed into the Hull penalty area by Wade Elliott only to be headed clear as far as Garreth O'Connor who brought the ball under control and fired the ball into the Hull box taking a deflection on the way. The ball was chested up by Akinbiyi facing away from goal in the Hull area then tapped round so it was facing goal. Ade then smashed the ball in to the net to the bottom right of keeper Myhill whose despairing dive was in vain to give Burnley a fully undeserved 1-0 lead. After this the game became more even. We had a chance to go 2-0 up when Myhill punched a Micah Hyde cross to Garreth O'Connor. O'Connor with a few players in front of him attempted to bend the ball inside Myhill's left hand post only to see his effort go narrowly wide. Just before half time Hull had a glorious chance to equalise after the linesman failed to notice the ball going out of play in our half leading to Chris Brown getting towards the edge of our box and then getting the better of Keith Lowe to get the ball into the box from the righ (defending point of view) to provide Ryan France with an excellent chance at Jensen's left hand post. The Beast however was out quickly to make a quick block and extinguish Hull's hopes of going in level.

Second Half

The now bald Gifton Noel-Williams was brought on to replace Spicer and partner Akinbiy for the start of the second half. The substitution almost had an immediate effect on the scoreline as GNW put Wade Elliott's cross into the Hull area just over the bar. Hull then had prehaps their best chance to equalise in the 53rd minute when Jon Harley lost the ball to Brown 35 yards from our goal after trying to be too clever. Brown went on into the box and had a glorious chance to shoot, but decided not to and Harley and Sinclair got back before Brown tried a tame effort which was easily saved by Jensen. The next effort of note was an on target free kick from 25 yards out which was saved comfortably by Myhill low to his left. Stuart Elliott then produced a thunderbolt from outside the area which rattled the bar, having watched a replay extensively I think Jensen may have got to it had it been dipping under anyway. This was followed by a Gifton Noel-Williams header not long after at the other end of the pitch which went narrowly wide from a Wade Elliott cross. The next chance of the match fell to Garreth O'Connor who disappointingly blasted the ball well over the bar after James O'Connor had burst into the Hull box and cut the ball back for him. In an effort to get the equaliser. Stuart Elliott then attempted to lob Jensen from inside the area which resulted in the ball bouncing wide. I would have been disappointed with the defence however had we ended up conceeding a goal because of that. Stuart Elliott was also to have the last chance of the game in the 4th minute of injury time in quite literally the last seconds of the game. The ball came to him on the right hand side of the area (defensive point of view) and he immediately unleashed a fierce shot which was dealt with by a tremendous reactrion stop by Brian Jensen to palm the ball over the bar just seconds before the full time whistle sounded.

The Referee and Linesmen

The referee had a decent first half and looked to be continuing that way until midway/late second half when he lost the plot firstly by awarded Hull a free kick for a dive then went off to talk to the linesman for ages, then made the absolutely baffling decision to move the free kick from the middle of the pitch to the right hand side of the pitch (attacking point of view) which resulted in a lot of Hull pressure including a corner. This was followed by a procession of silly free kicks. Performance 5/10

Man of the Match

There's only two players I could give this award to Brian "The Beast" Jensen or Ade Akinbiyi. Brian Jensen as I mentioned in my overview of the game saved magnificently on many occasions most notably in the last seconds of the game to preserve the 3 points and Ade Akinbiyi scored an absolute stunner as well putting in one of his usual hard working performances never giving up. For me though the award goes to Brian Jensen because if not for him we would have lost even with Ade's goal although Hull should still have managed to score given some of the positions they found themselves in.
