Clarets Trust are pleased and privileged to announce that Peter Pike, who recently retired from Parliament after serving the constituency of Burnley for 22 years, has formally accepted an invitation from the Trust’s Steering Group to become Chairman.

We are pleased and privileged to announce that Peter Pike, who recently retired from Parliament after serving the constituency of Burnley for 22 years, has formally accepted an invitation from the Trust’s Steering Group to become Chairman…

The appointment takes effect immediately, with outgoing Chair Steve Corrigan taking on the roles of Secretary and Membership Secretary.

For those of you who are living in exile and may not be aware of Peter’s devotion to all things Burnley, we can do no better than to quote the words of Kitty Ussher, Peter’s successor as MP for Burnley, in her maiden speech to the House of Commons on 19th May 2005:

“Peter Pike served the town so well in the 22 years that he was Burnley's Member of Parliament. He decided on his vocation at an early age. He was evacuated to Burnley as a child during the second world war and decided then that he wanted to be the town's Member of Parliament. Returning as an adult, he worked in the Mullards factory, where he swiftly gained a reputation as an effective shop steward and was also agent for the then Member of Parliament for Burnley, Dan Jones, who, of course, was the father of my hon. Friend the Member for Stockton, South (Ms Taylor). Peter fulfilled his childhood ambition when he followed Dan Jones into Parliament in 1983. He said at the time that he would do his best for the people of Burnley—a promise that he certainly kept. He has a special place in the hearts of Burnley people and his local reputation as a hard-working Member of Parliament is second to none.”

Peter is a keen Burnley fan, and has been honorary President of the London Clarets since the late 1980s. He is going to become actively involved in Clarets Trust business, and in particular we are hoping that he will be using his many contacts in the Burnley area to help further one of the Trust’s aims of promoting BFC in the community.

We are sure you will join us in extending a warm welcome to Peter, in what we see as a major step forward in putting the Clarets Trust on the map.
