The Overview
Ipswich Town hardly threatened as we pummeled them by three goals to nil. The goals coming from a James O'Connor shot deflected over Lewis Price by Jason De Vos, a daisy cutter from Gareth O'Connor from just outside the box after a free kick was knocked to the right for him and a corner headed in by youngster Chris McCann. Interestingly all three scorers come from Dublin. Burnley kicked the match off with James O'Connor and Micah Hyde being responsible for taking the centre. Ade Akinbiyi had a woeful night as he missed chance after chance. On another day he'd have had at least a hat trick. The first major event of the game was when he had a shot well saved by Lewis Price after beating two defenders. Ipswich had a penalty shout when Owen Garvan went down under pressure from Frank Sinclair. It looked to me a dive and slightly outside the box so to my mind justice was done when no spot kick was awarded although he should have been yellow carded. Not long after Ade found himself one on one with the keeper at the side of the keeper's left hand post. With John Spicer running through into the box Ade decided to shoot himself, but his effort was poor and Lewis Price saved it with ease. Spicer had the whole net to aim at so would almost certainly have scored had Ade passed the ball back to him. We controlled the game from then without making a breakthrough until the 32nd minute when a ball was played over the top to James O'Connor who decided to take a shot from 25 yards. We were then rewarded with a bit of luck which we've been sorely lacking this season as O'Connor's shot cannoned of De Vos and lobbed Price. It was one of those moments when the ball seemed to take an age to drop into the net, but on watching the replay it didn't. Not long after that in the 33rd minute a corner picked out Ade Akinbiyi who passed the ball to John Spicer in the Ipswich box who had a lot to aim at, but unfortunately he swung and missed and that was it in terms of chances for the first half. Akinbiyi started the second half by making Lewis Price turn away his low shot. Shortly after Ade missed a sitter although he was being fouled. Spicer flicked the ball onto him and he burst through into the Ipswich box. De Vos was pulling him back and Ade shot high to the keeper's left, but hit the side netting. It should have been a penalty, but Akinbiyi still should have scored. Akinbiyi then proceeded to miss another sitter slipping as he was about to shot after James O'Connor had blocked a poor clearance from Ipswich defender Luis Castro Sito. You got the feeling at this stage it could be one of those days where you have loads of chances only score one and then the other side gets one chance right at the end and equalises. Luckily it wasn't as Graham Branch was fouled just outside the goal resulting in a free kick for us 25 yards out. As soon as we got it I had a feeling that Gareth O'Connor was going to score. Four players gathered around the ball hoping to trick the Ipswich defence as we did to the Preston defence when we had 2 players run into each other on purpose at a free kick. A lot of people would have been expecting a shot directly from the free kick, but instead the ball was played right to Gareth O'Connor who propelled a daisy cutter into the bottom right hand corner of the net (from attacking point of view) to make it Burnley 2-0 Ipswich Town. Chris McCann came on in the 75th minute to replace John Spicer who had an excellent game. Not long after coming on he tried his look from just outside the box only for his shot to strike Akinbiyi's backside. Akinbiyi missed another good chance shortly after when Gareth O'Connor crossed the ball to him at the keeper's right. All he needed to do was steer the ball inside the post, but he managed to steer it wide disappointingly. The match was now drawing to a close, but we were still to score again as a Gareth O'Connor corner from the left (attacking point of view) was headed in to the right hand side of the net by youngster Chris McCann for his first Burnley goal. I was expecting Chris McCann to score sooner or later, but I'd imagined it would have been from one of his thunderous shots rather than a header. Apart from Karl Bermingham replacing Ade Akinbiyi in the 89th minute and the full time whistle that proved to be the last major action of the match.

The Referee and Linesmen

The linesman were poor throughout the match constantly flagging players offside who were clearly onside. The referee, M Pike wasn't as good as recent referees we've had, but wasn't as poor as some we had earlier in the season. He missed a few free kicks and an obvious penalty when De Vos pulled Akinbiyi back.

Man of the Match

There is only two players I could give this to. Gareth O'Connor and John Spicer. I have decided to give it to Gareth O'Connor as the only real thing that separated them was one scored and the other didn't. They were both lively and created lots of problems for the Ipswich Town defence.
