The Overview
 
This was a game that Burnley dominated throughout without really putting any pressure on Preston goalkeeper Carlo Nash. The first major incident of the match came in the first half when we were through on goal, Paul McKenna was unable to do anything other than handle the ball to stop it from going through. It looked to me a definite red card offence, but he rececived just a yellow from Oxfordshire referee Dermot Gallagher. We bossed the rest of the first half apart from when Dave Nugent looked to be through, but an excellent tackle from John McGreal stopped him from giving Preston an undeserved lead. Jon Harley should however have in the second half at least made him make a save and probably should have scored. It stemmed from a free kick in which Jon Harley ran into Micah Hyde clearly to distract the Preston players then broke free into the right hand side of the box (from the keepers point of view), the ball was played in to him and he somehow managed to kick the ball straight in front of him rather than sidefoot it up into the roof of the net . Ade Akinbiyi caused the Preston defence problems whilst running at them winning corners and keeping Preston under the cosh. Preston rarely threatened they had a few chances late on in the second half and the occasional break, but overall we dominated and should really have won the game.

Penalty Incidents

Billy Davies showed that Craig Brown really had rubbed off on him with his whinging. According to him Preston should have had a penalty. Well we should have had at least two and possibly three. Firstly Nash came to try and catch a ball coming towards Akinbiyi and didn't, he then came down on Akinbiyi preventing him from running after the ball, secondly Akinbiyi was clearly being held in the area during an attack and finally Gifton Noel-Williams looked to be bundled over when fighting for the ball running into the Preston penalty area.
 
The Referee

Not perfect, but a lot better than a lot of the rubbish we've had so far this season. Didn't send McKenna off early in the first half and missed some penalties although it could be argued that the linesman was to blame for not spotting those. He let the game flow though and didn't seem whistle happy.
 
Man of the Match

A hard one as everyone played excellently. John McGreal excellently tackled Nugent to make sure Preston didn't get the lead. Jon Harley was his usual excellent sel', but missed a good chance. Ade Akinbiyi looked a real threat and caused the Preston defence a lot of worries and it is for that reason that he was my "Man of the Match".
