Belgian international Defour struck 17 minutes from time with his first goal for the club, following a magnificent turn and run at goal from the half way line. But with virtually the last kick of the game, Snodgrass struck to level matters and break Burnley hearts. Clarets’ record signing Jeff Hendrick was named among the substitutes, after spending just two days training with his new team mates. But there was a first start for Icelandic summer signing Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who replaced Scott Arfield. However, it was a lively start from the visitors and Tom Heaton needed to be alert in the ninth minute to parry away an 18-yeard effort from Abel Hernandez, who looked to find the bottom corner with placement rather than power. An almighty scramble from Burnley’s first corner, which saw two George Boyd shots blocked, signalled the hosts’ immediate intent. And when Gudmundsson’s far post volley was deflected out into the path of Stephen Ward with 25 minutes on the clock, the Republic of Ireland full back’s audacious attempt from outside the box flew inches over. This early in the season there cannot be any such thing as a must win game. But for obvious reasons this game is as close as you're going to get to one in September. We really do not want anything less than three points.

a defeat will have us all long faced and making wild forecasts that we are all doomed
but a win and another 3 points... what a boost ... an on course again for Europe

To add to bobs comment,Surely a good start to the season can only breed confidence and if we can look like a side that has a reasonable chance of staying up come January that can only help in enticing more quality players to join the cause.

That patch of form cost us as we didn't pick up points but it makes no odds where that pitch of form started an ended. There are 30 periods where that winless run could have stated. Didn't make no odds when it happened. Sean has said as much. It's all media BS rhetoric that gets spat out.
The bad start didn't cost us at all. We could have swapped that run or games for the results in another run of games, switched them around and the points outcome (for us) us still the same.

Yes,I agree Dave..I respect Manhugs opinions,as he is usually spot on,but in this case I have to differ with him.. It wouldn't be right though if we all held the same opinions ..
I suppose I should feel guilty, it was me wot first mentioned 'must win game', which kicked of the shitstorm of abuse, but I don't. It's a regular feature on forums, this foaming at the mouth at the mention of must win games and I love it.

In some ways this IS a "must win" game - for morale, self-confidence, self-belief, contentment with a "successful" transfer window - beating Hull will give the Clarets' squad a boost that will last them a couple of months.

Another cliché then, not only is this almost a 'must win game' and a 'six pointer', we are Hull's 'bogey team'.
If we had won that it would have been papering over the cracks, we were 2nd best all afternoon against a team we were 10 points better than last season.

I can remember a couple of years ago after a game, he was talking about all the positive aspects, than the interviewer mentioned someone having to go off injured and said that must have been a negative, he just said 'Don't do negative'.
Negative is in itself a negative which is self defeating and pointless.Delusion is considerably better than negative which puts negative into perspective.
