But they tell only half the story - and the Clarets were unfortunate to find substitute keeper Davis in stunning form in a rare first team outing.

The 38-year-old was an early replacement for the injured Fraser Forster – and rolled back the years with a stunning display.

Davis, making his first Premier League start since New Year’s Day 2014, twice denied Sam Vokes inside the opening 45 minutes and made a third, breathtaking stop before the break to deny Danny Ings a certain equaliser.

And the Clarets’ disappointing day on the south coast was complete when George Boyd was denied a strong first half penalty appeal.

Burnley were unchanged from the team that euphorically beat the champions at Turf Moor, while on the bench striker Marvin Sordell came in for the injured Stephen Ward.

But it was a confident start from the hosts, fresh from their own impressive draw at Chelsea, before an unfortunate injury to Forster halted play for five minutes.

The England keeper suffered an injury to his ankle after clearing under pressure from Vokes and after a lengthy delay was stretchered off to be replaced by veteran stopper Davis.

There soon followed a half chance for Ings, who just failed to get the ball out from under his feet as he advanced on goal from a terrific through ball from Ashley Barnes.
