Conlan Rejoins The Clarets

By Burnley FC
September 9 2014

Northern Ireland U21 international Luke Conlan has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Clarets. The 19-year-old defender, recruited from Northern Ireland in 2011, was a key part of the side that reached the 2012 FA Youth Cup semi-final and recently netted for the development squad in the impressive 5-0 win against Aston Villa.

And having originally being released last summer and subsequently re-signing at Turf Moor, the defender admits he is happy to be home as he looks to kick on and progress following a summer recovering from injury.

Conlan said: “I’m very happy to be back at the club, I know a lot of the lads from the last few years and this is where I want to be at.
“I want to progress now with Burnley again and hopefully kick on in the next year.

“I had a few other offers from clubs who wanted me to go on trial but as soon as the opportunity came up here to get another contract it was what I wanted to do.

Find this a queer one, he was released this Summer......but weve now given him a contract now?

Despite being clogged up with Ward, Mee, Taylor and Lafferty as LB options.

Cisak with a new two year deal is odd too.

Please lets get Marney on a new 3 year.

You get the impression of chaos at Turf Moor, do they actually know what they're doing ? Players seem to be coming and going on a whim, is anyone overseeing all this because this summer's dealings have been a complete shambles, Conlan released and then signed on again just the latest example.

he had a bad knee injury last season so i think they were waiting to see how it settled down before offering a contract to him.

Bit mysterious that bad knee injury, he was certainly still playing in April in the U21 PL Cup against City, and he played in the Lancs Senior Cup on the 15th April against Bury. No mention of it when he was released either, as far as I'm aware.

Anyway it appears that, to the surprise of BFC he's made a full, if miraculous, recovery, so that's alright.

you're right, looking around the suggestion is it was a chronic problem rather than a sudden one.

strange. i suppose its not the done thing to tell everyone a player has been released because of injury. there was plenty of kicking off when bruce announced to the world that austin had a duff knee and liverpool haven't said why they wouldn't sign remy either, rumoured to be an injury/health thing wasn't it?

It's a strange situation all round DF, I think we generally look after our young players yet Conlan seems to have been dumped because he had a bit of a problem with his knee, and then taken back on when the club's own employees have helped him get over it.

He seemed to be highly rated yet they were happy to risk letting him sign for someone else before having second thoughts and taking him back on. All very odd.

Don't see that much of the youth team or dev squad any more MH, so can't really comment. Couple of years ago he looked very promising, but so did half a dozen others, most of whom have been released as well. They all seem to vanish into the Gawthorpe Black Hole just when they should be getting into the first team squad.

Hewitt on a 2 year deal, at his age?

That's the mystery though MH isn't it, we've had two separate squads recently good enough to get to semi- finals, beating academy teams along the way, more than 20 teenagers amongst the best in the country. They were good enough at 18 but, as far as I know, not a single one of them has yet turned out good enough to hold down a regular place in even a D2 team in their twenties.

Problem with these youth teams is you are better off having a poor team with a couple of very good players.
The last two youth teams were solid teams without any players that really stood out.

In the first squad Harvey, Fletcher and McDonald stood out, in the second it was Hewitt and Howieson, all were playing with the first team squad in pre-season friendlies while still in the youth team.

Ah, he was MacDonald mate.

Was he really in a team as late as you say?

Same age at J-Rod isn't he (even a few months older maybe)?

Time to get Hewitt, Howieson and Gilchrist out on short term loans - get some games into them!

Fair do, always imagined they were like for like in age.

Hewitt getting a 2 year deal at his age, staggering waste of money.

It only makes sense if you accept my theory that they're running a cut-price shadow squad for when we get relegated, how else can you explain the numerous players we have under contract who are nowhere near, and never will be, good enough for the first team ?

It might sound daft but give me a better reason why players like Lafferty, O'Neill and Hewitt are getting these contracts.
