Burnley 2 Preston North End 0

By Burnley FC
August 27 2013

Burnley earned the local bragging rights as they eased past Lancashire rivals Preston in the Capital One Cup.

Right back Kieran Trippier’s fifth minute free kick lit the fuse on a barnstorming cup tie before Danny Ings’ fourth goal of the season just after the half hour gave Burnley breathing space.

Goalkeeper Alex Cisak, deputising for the suspended Tom Heaton, helped preserve that lead as North End rallied, making two agile saves in each half to deny Bailey Wright and Joel Byrom.

And when Cisak was finally beaten, Jason Shackell’s goal line clearance was clear evidence this was not to be North End’s night, as Burnley went into the hat for Wednesday’s third round draw.

Burnley made three outfield changes for the Turf Moor tie, which saw the experiment of lower tiers of the home stands only open to try and encourage a better atmosphere for the players.

Ben Mee and Michael Duff both made their first starts of the season in defence, with Danny Lafferty and Kevin Long making way.

And in midfield David Edgar started, with Dean Marney dropping to the bench.

It was as I was driving up past Tesco, looked to be kicking off towards the far corner of the car park where the Thompson centre used to be, though more based upon what bits I could hear and young lads charging in that direction.

Good job we were playing a D1 team, play like that against a decent Championship team and we'd get our bottoms well and truly spanked.

Listened to the game on Clarets world last night, Tom Heaton was co commentating and he came across brilliantly. Very positive and level headed.
He had some really good things to say about the set up at Burnley (I know he would!) And Sean Dyche. He said that he has never worked at a club where the team are so fit. He says there is a massive sense of togetherness.

What I was going to say was that his summing up of the game was that it was always comfortable and that we were always in control. Sound like tere are mixed views om that?

Longsiders1882
28/08/2013 09:40
For me Casper they had 15 minutes after half time other wise I felt we were reasonably comfortable without being great.

The keeper did make 3 good saves, and PNE did attack in numbers and at pace but they lacked that bit of quality which we were able to show in brief flashes.

All in all we deserved it, we weren't at our best but we had more than enough to see the game off.

It reminded me of the times when we were a lower division club and played higher division clubs in the cup. Often we played well, looked the better team, but ended up losing, the higher division teams always seemed to find a way to win and that was the case in this game last night. As far as football was concerned they played us off the park, we were only comfortable in the last ten minutes when they ran out of steam. That was one of the least convincing 2-0 wins you're ever likely to see.

Not sure just how much we're missing Wallace MH, but it certainly didn't improve us not having him in, we were all over the place in midfield last night.

I saw a different game to you BC.

Jones was poor though, was expecting a lot more from him.

In the game I saw Longsiders Preston had 16 shots, we had 9. Preston had 8 corners we had 5. I had an uneasy feeling in the second half that if they'd got the goal they were always threatening to score we were likely to go into full panic mode, and I'd have put money on extra-time. Until the last 10 minutes 'comfortable' is not a word I'd use to describe our situation, I've seen us lose a lead too often in the past for that.

I know we won and that's all that matters, but conceding 16 shots and 8 corners at home to a D1 team isn't the sort of performance I'm happy about.

I agree about Jones, ineffective last night, but I suspect he'd have been much happier with the more mobile Marney alongside him, Edgar and Jones just didn't seem to gel at all, we were comprehensively outplayed in the middle of the park.

I think between you and the stats PNE sound a lot better than they appeared to me. For all their endeavour they seemed to lack any real quality - which we delivered in occasional spurts (resulting in 2 goals and Ings' bizarre decision to run across the box until the keeper took the ball off his toes.

Other than 15 minutes after half time I wasn't vaguely worried to be honest. They did have 3 decent shots to be fair - our keeper dealt with them all.

We weren't vintage yet won with relative ease against a team that should have been desperate for a chance to get one over on their local rivals as well as taking another scalp from the division above.

I thought we were pretty poor apart from the defence yesterday. Might have been down to the early goal and thinking the job was done but it was a very laidback, sloppy performance i thought.

You always expect the away team to have a certain spell of pressure and possession, but last night we allowed them to dominate for way too long. In saying that, our defence coped very well with everything they could muster.
You could tell we had that bit of quality to see us through. We didnt make the unforced errors that they seemed to do every 5 minutes. And when we ran at their defence, and with our movement, we did look very dangerous.

Must say i was very impressed with Cisak, and i wouldnt mind at all if he keeps his place in the starting line-up.

Considering his fitness must not be 100% and that he had Treacle in front of him thought he was decent. Also thought Arfield put a shift in, maybe needs to back himself a little more at times.

Good question that aggi, they did swop over a few times but I saw a lot more of Treacy from the Bob Lord in both halves so I'd say Treacy was mainly left in the first half and mainly right in the second. I do stand to be corrected on that though, I could be mistaken.

Arfield was definitely right in first half and left second half because he was in front of us most of the game.

Maybe aggi Sean had Treacy in front the Bob Lord last night the better to keep an eye on him, give him a bit of 'encouragement' like. It's not so easy to switch off when the manager's breathing down your neck.

I was sat just behind Dyche and it was interesting to see the way he was always ready to applaud and give the thumbs up to the players, but never showed any irritation or annoyance when they cocked up, which they did often last night.
